Baseball Faces No. 3/4 Johns Hopkins, Rutgers-Newark and Franklin & Marshall to Conclude Florida Trip

WHAT TO KNOW

•    After opening its season in San Antonio, Texas, in late February, the Babson baseball team will play the final three of its seven games in Florida beginning on Tuesday morning. 
•    The Beavers opened the trip with a loss to Bowdoin last Friday and defeated Saint Joseph (Conn.) 9-8 last Saturday before suffering rain-shortened losses to Amherst (5-2, 6 inn.) on Sunday and Scranton (10-8, 8 inn.) on Monday. 

SERIES HISTORY
vs. Johns Hopkins: Babson is 1-2 all-time against the Blue Jays in a series that dates back to 1997. The Beavers suffered a pair of one-run losses to Johns Hopkins at the 2019 College World Series. 

vs. Rutgers-Newark: Babson is 0-1 all-time against the Scarlet Raiders after suffering a 6-5 loss back in 1994. 

vs. Franklin & Marshall: The Beavers are 3-0 all-time versus the Diplomats in a series that began in 2015 and recorded an 18-8 victory in Florida back in 2024. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (2-5) has dropped three of its first four games in Florida and is coming off a 10-8 loss to Scranton on Monday afternoon. 
•    Graduate student Ryan Grace is batting .444 with three homers, two doubles, 12 RBI and seven runs scored, junior Jack Moses is hitting .357 with two RBI and sophomore Dylan Drazka owns a .333 average to go along with a .500 on-base percentage, four RBI and two runs scored in six games. 
•    Graduate student Joe Carrea (0-0, 0.47 WHIP) has seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits in 6.1 innings over three appearances, classmate Michael Camardi is 1-0 with a 3.00 earned run average over 6.0 innings out of the bullpen, and senior Zander Teator has fanned four and has two saves in two relief appearances this spring. 

SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
•    No. 3 D3baseball.com/No. 4 ABCA Johns Hopkins (11-3) had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 4-3 loss to Endicott on in a game that was completed on Monday. 
•    Clay Hartje is batting .442 with two homers, 19 RBI and 13 runs scored, Alex Shane is hitting .429 with a .538 on-base percentage, six doubles, two homers, 17 RBI and 22 runs scored, and William Jaun enters Tuesday's contest with a .381 average, four doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI and 21 runs scored this spring. 
•    Thomas Cancian (1-1, 1.53 ERA) has 20 strikeouts and is holding opposing hitters to a .138 average over 17.2 innings of work, Kieren Collins is 3-0 with a 4.20 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 15.0 innings in three starts, and Michael Yousef has gone 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four appearances out of the bullpen. 

SCOUTING THE SCARLET RAIDERS
•    Rutgers-Newark (5-6) are a perfect 3-0 in Florida and have won four consecutive games entering Tuesday's clash with Mount St. Vincent. 
•    Matthew Torreto is batting .321 with a double, four runs batted in and eight runs scored, Michael Weinbel is hitting .303 and boasts a .500 on-base percentage to go along with three homers, two doubles and 12 RBI, and Joseph Bernardo owns a .289 average to go along with four doubles, seven RBI and eight runs scored. 
•    Joey Santi is 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched, Chase Ostrowski (0-0, 1.35 ERA) boasts a 0.90 WHIP and five strikeouts in 6.2 innings out of the bullpen, and Lukas Meyer (0-0, 5.40 ERA) is holding opposing hitters to a .174 average in four relief appearances. 

SCOUTING THE DIPLOMATS
•    Franklin & Marshall (8-3) has own its first two games in Florida and will face Scranton on Tuesday before meeting Babson on Thursday. 
•    Tanner Wolpert is batting .500 with two homers, three doubles, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored, Matt Hollender is hitting .450 with a .542 on-base percentage, six doubles, a home run and a team-high 17 runs batted in, and Michael von Zuben boasts a .415 average to go along with five doubles, a triple, nine RBI and 16 runs scored. 
•    David McGeorge is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP in 22.1 innings pitched, Colin Mackenzie (0-1, 2.13 ERA) has 13 strikeouts in 12.2 innings and Kiernan Keller has gone 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 8.2 innings over five appearances out of the bullpen this spring. 

FAMILY TIES
•    Head coach Matt Noone will see a familiar face across the diamond on Wednesday when his Beavers take on Rutgers-Newark, which has been led by former Babson standout Conor Kortman '13 since 2021.  
•    Kortmann started 108 of 116 career games as a player under Noone before returning as an assistant coach and helping the Green and White win a pair of conference championships in 2017 and 2018 before advancing to the College World Series for the first time in 2019.  
•    One of the members of the Beavers' 2019 CWS squad was Eric Jaun '19, who started 162 of 165 career games over four seasons, and his brother William joined Johns Hopkins as a graduate transfer following four years at Cornell. 

THAT FLORIDA FEELING
•    Over the Beavers' first four games in the Sunshine State, Grace is batting .500 (7-for-14) with three home runs, eight RBI and a 1.143 slugging percentage. 
•    Junior Ian Laforest, who had a career-high four RBI in Saturday's win over Saint Joseph (Conn.), and Moses both own a .500 OBP and have combined to drive in six runs over the first four games of the trip. 

STREAKING BEAVERS
•    Junior Ryan Liss has reached base safely in 37 consecutive games going back to March 15 of last season. 
•    Grace owns a seven-game hitting streak, while Laforest and senior Owen Stephens have at least one knock in four and three straight games, respectively. 
•    Teator, who is second on the team with seven walks, has reached base in each of his six games this spring and has recorded at least one strikeout in seven consecutive relief appearances. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    Babson is 21-4 going back to the start of last season when scoring six or more runs. 
•    The Beavers are 1-0 this spring and 46-1 since the start of the 2024 campaign when leading after six innings. 
•    The Green and White is 9-9 in the month of March over the last two seasons.
•    Babson is 2-1 in games decided by either one or two runs this year.

UP NEXT
•    After wrapping up its trip on Thursday, the Beavers return home and will open NEWMAC play against Wheaton at Govoni Field on March 24 at 3:30 p.m.
