MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—Babson College senior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) was voted as the Athlete of the Year,
Julie Ryan and her three assistants were honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year, and five members of the field hockey team were recognized when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its field hockey postseason awards on Wednesday.
DiGiovanni was joined on the All-NEWMAC First Team by senior defender
Sanne van der Goes (Glenview, Ill.), sophomore midfielder
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.), and first-year defender
Anna Bonazzoli (Clinton, Mass.), while sophomore midfielder
Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, Colo.) earned a Second Team honor for the third-ranked Beavers.
Ryan and her assistants
Meghan Evans,
Lindsey O'Coin and
Tori Roche were honored with the coaching staff recognition, earning the award for the Green and White for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and the 11th time overall. They led a Babson team that graduated eight starters from last year to an unbeaten conference regular season (9-0) for the ninth year in a row and their fifth consecutive NEWMAC championship and seventh overall.
A four-year veteran and three-year starter,
DiGiovanni received her second All-Conference honor this season and a first-team accolade for the first time. She has piled up career-highs and NEWMAC-leading totals of 24 goals and 48 points and ranks 10th in Division III in goals per game (1.14) and 23rd in points per game. The Babson senior produced a career-best seven-game goal-scoring streak and five multi-goal outings, including a hat trick against Clark and a career-high four goals in a win over the University of New England. She also led the NEWMAC with eight game-winning scores.
A veteran of 83 career games with 65 starts, DiGiovanni has scored 58 goals with five assists for 121 points. She ranks fifth on the Babson all-time single-season goals list, fourth on the all-time career goals list, and ninth on the career points list. A first-team All-Region selection last year, she was named the Most Outstanding Player in last week's NEWMAC Tournament.
The 2024 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year,
Baroni earned her first All-Conference award this year after finishing second on the team in scoring with 11 goals and seven assists for 29 points. She ranks in the top 10 in the NEWMAC in goals (7th), assists (5th) and points (8th). She has produced two multi-goal games, including a hat trick in a season-opening win over Endicott, and ranks second in the NEWMAC with five game-winner goals.
A starter in 20 games this season and 31 of her 43 career games, she has scored 16 career goals and added eight assists for 40 points
Two key starters for the Babson defense this season,
van der Goes and
Bonazzoli both earned their first All-Conference honor after back boning a squad that has allowed just 19 goals in 21 games while recording 10 shutouts. They lead a Beaver defense that allowed just three goals in nine NEWMAC regular season games with six shutouts and then posted back-to-back whitewashes on the way to the conference tournament title. Babson ranks 15h in Division III with a 0.89 team goals against average and 14th in shutouts per game.
A four-year veteran, van der Goes has started on defense for the Beavers in the last 82 of her 84 career appearances, helping the team to 44 shutouts in 91 games. Bonazzoli started all 21 games at center back as a rookie this fall, tallied a goal and two assists and was twice named NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week.
A starter in 12 of 20 games this year,
Shoflick has been valuable to the team in several positions on the field in a defensive role. She started five of the first six games of the season as well as the final six in a row and helped the defense register 10 shutouts and allow one goal or fewer in 17 of the 21 games. She added an assist on the game-winning goal in a victory over Mount Holyoke back in September.
No. 3 Babson (20-1), winners of 16 games in a row, will serve as an NCAA regional host for second and third round games this weekend at MacDowell Field. The Beavers will take on either No. 15 Bowdoin College (9-7) or the University of Scranton (17-3) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
