No. 13 Women’s Tennis Outlasted by No. 28 Bowdoin in Final Match in California, 6-3

Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif.— No. 28 Bowdoin College won two of three doubles matches and pulled out three singles matches in three sets to outlast No. 13 Babson College, 6-3, in a dramatic non-conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Claremont Club.

Junior Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) were winners in both singles and doubles for the Beavers while first-year Caroline Stuhlfaut (Duxbury, Mass.) was the lone double winner for the Polar Bears.

With the outcome, the Beavers suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 4-1, while Bowdoin snapped a two-match skid and improved to 4-2.

The Polar Bears jumped on top when senior Hannah Buckhout (Weston, Mass.) and first-year Caroline Stuhlfaut (Duxbury, Mass.) breezed to an 8-1 win over junior Laetitia Rizk (Beirut, Lebanon) and sophomore Elena Keitt (Austin, Texas) at number three doubles. Babson got on the board when Soffer and Cristiani, who are ranked No. 2 in Division III, took an 8-6 victory over senior Elizabeth Yu (Edison, N.J.) and junior Jamilah Karah (Berkeley, Calif.) at number one, but Bowdoin finished out doubles with a 2-1 advantage after sophomore Cara Hung (Arcadia, Calif.) and first-year Zoe Sun (Sherborn, Mass.) downed senior Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and first-year Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at number two, 8-6.

The Beavers rallied for a 3-2 lead in the team score when Soffer and Cristiani won straight-set matches in the top two singles flights. Soffer, ranked No. 17 in Division III, rolled past Karah at number one, 6-2, 6-3, and Cristiani, ranked No. 3 in Division III, defeated Hung at number two, 6-2, 6-1. Bowdoin regained the lead at 4-3 with a pair of tight victories in the bottom two flights as Stuhlfaut got past senior Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) at number five, 6-3, 7-6, and junior Julia DeLuca (New Canaan, Conn.) needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat sophomore Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at number six, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Bowdoin secured the win when Yu pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Rizk at number three and first-year Julia Ross (Winnetka, Ill.) took a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 decision over Chaniel Soffer at number four.

The Beavers return to New England and will play the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener and spring home debut against Smith on March 23 at the Babson Tennis Courts. Bowdoin continues its California trip at Point Loma on Monday in San Diego.
