No. 5 Women's Tennis Blanks Clark and Skidmore, Extends Winning Streak to Seven

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) won a pair of matches at number one doubles, while first-years Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) and Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) both won two singles matches as No. 5 Babson College recorded 7-0 victories over both Clark University and Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon. 

Babson, which has won seven consecutive matches, is now 11-3 overall and 5-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Clark is 5-8 overall and 0-5 in conference matches, while Skidmore dropped to 4-10 with its third straight loss. 

Babson 7, Clark 0
The Beavers needed just 17 minutes to win the doubles point with 6-0 victories in all three matches. Matia Cristiani picked up her second win of the day by defeating Varvara Maltseva (Tres Cantos, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0 at number one and junior Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at number six over Cougars' sophomore Amanda Keith (Brookfield, Conn.). 

Liu and Wang recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at number two and three singles, respectively, and fellow rookie Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at number five. Senior Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) put the finishing touches on the victory by beating first-year Marcela Gonyea (Vienna, Va.) 6-2, 6-3 at number four. 

Babson 7, Skidmore 0
The Beavers, which won by default at number three, claimed the doubles point thanks to a 6-1 victory at number one from Matia Cristiani and Sikharulidze. The Thoroughbreds duo of junior Ruth Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio) and first-year Ellie Lake (Annapolis, Md.) recorded a 6-4 win over junior Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) at number three. 

The Green and White dominated in singles, winning five matches in straight sets in addition to a victory by default at number six. Sikharulidze defeated Skidmore first-year Ginevra Muratori (Como, Italy) 6-4, 6-3 at number one, Liu was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over rookie Amelie Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) at number two, and Alessandra Cristiani registered a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at number three. 

Wang blanked Wilson 6-0, 6-0 at number five and Kamal was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number five to complete the victory. 

Babson is off until next Saturday when it hosts Springfield at 1 p.m. 

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers are 29-2 against Clark going back to 1994 and have won 25 straight matches between the teams. 
•    Babson is now 1-1 versus Skidmore and Saturday's match was the first between the squads since the second round of the NCAA Tournament back in May 2015. 
•    The Green and White is 23-1 at the Babson Tennis Courts dating back to May 3, 2023.
