BABSON PARK, Mass.—Five different players recorded wins in both singles and doubles to help No. 6 Babson College defeat No. 36 Wellesley College, 6-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Sunday night inside the Longfellow Tennis Center.
With its ninth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 13-3 overall and is now 7-0 in conference play. Wellesley had its four-match winning streak halted and is now 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.
The Beavers wasted little time picking up the doubles point as senior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year
Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) won 6-1 at number one, while sophomore
Sarai Dorismond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first-year
Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) followed suit with a 6-1 victory at number three. Babson completed the sweep as sophomore
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year
Elizabeth Shu (Sugar Land, Texas) edge Blue junior Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luna Bian (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
The Green and White secured the match by winning each of the first four completed singles matches.
Matia Cristiani was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over sophomore Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) at number one, Sikharulidze pulled away from sophomore Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) for a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at number two, and
Alessandra Cristiani breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Sarav at number five. Wang also earned a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 victory over first-year Praslin Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) at number six for the Beavers.
Wellesley picked up its lone point of the match thanks to sophomore Sophie Buttorf's (Tacoma, Wash.) 6-1, 6-2 win over Babson first-year
Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) before Shu outlasted Bian 7-6, 7-6 at number three for the hosts' final point.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts No. 13 Washington & Lee at 3:15 p.m., while Wellesley takes on Clark on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers have won six of their last seven matches against Wellesley and are 13-4 in the series since 2015.
• Babson is now 7-3 this spring against teams ranked in the ITA Top 40.
• The Green and White is 13-0 this season and has won its last 21 matches when securing the doubles point going back to last year.
