Weekend Preview: Men's Basketball Set for Two Games with Saint Joseph (Conn.)

SERIES HISTORY
• Babson and Saint Joseph will meet for the first time on Saturday to begin a two-game home-and-home series.

SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
• Saint Joseph (0-2) opened the season with back-to-back losses to No. 4 Yeshiva, which won its 35th straight game by defeating the Blue Jays 71-62 on Monday night.
• Senior Jordan Powell finished with 15 points to lead four players in double figures and junior Jaecee Martin added 14 points, seven assists and three steals for USJ, which led 35-27 at halftime.
• Powell (17.5 pts, 8.0 reb) leads the team in scoring and rebounding, junior Tyree Mitchell (15.0 pts, 3.0 reb) has gone 6-of-9 from three-point range over the first two games, while Martin is contributing 12.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 3.0 steals in 35.5 minutes.
• The Blue Jays return all but two players from a team that went 26-3 and reached the NCAA Tournament in just their second season last winter.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (5-0) stayed unbeaten with an 83-58 victory at Mitchell on Wednesday night.
• Junior James Welch led all scorers with 21 points and classmate Colin Bradanese added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers, who pulled away by shooting 56.7 percent in the second half.
• Welch (16.0 pts, 2.8 reb) is shooting 58.3 percent from the floor, Bradanese (14.6 pts, 6.4 reb) leads the team in rebounding, and senior Andrew Jaworski is averaging 14.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
• The Green and White has scored at least 80 points in each of its first five games and is shooting 51.4 percent on the year.

LEGENDS ON THE SIDELINE
• Babson head coach Stephen Brennan and his Saint Joseph counterpart Jim Calhoun boast a combined six Final Four appearances, four national championships and 1,340 wins.
• Nine-time conference coach of the year and the 2017 NABC Division III Coach of the Year, Brennan guided the Beavers to their first national championship in 2017 after making a run to the Final Four in 2015.
• He enters this weekend's series ranked 26th among active Division III coaches with 425 career wins.
• Calhoun famously won three national titles at the University of Connecticut (1999, 2004, 2011) and won 873 games as a Division I head coach before becoming the Blue Jays' first coach in 2018.

DEEP THREAT
• Welch was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in Wednesday's win at Mitchell and ranks 19th in Division III in three-point field goal percentage (56.2).
• His 18 three-pointers through the first five games are already one more than he made all of last season.

SCORING WITH EFFICIENCY
• Over its last three games, Babson is averaging 1.17 points per possession while shooting 57.9 percent on two-point field goal attempts and 42.7 percent from three-point range.
• During this stretch, the Beavers' 41 three-point field goals and 96 attempts are their most in a three-game period over the last decade.

DROPPING DIMES
• Sophomore Andrew Kirkpatrick ranks 10th in Division III dishing out a team-high 5.8 assists per game, while Jaworski ranks 24th nationally averaging 5.0 assists.
• As a team, the Green and White ranks eighth in Division III doling out 19.8 assists per game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Going back to the start of last season, the Beavers are 20-2 when reaching the 80-point mark in regulation.
• This weekend's opponent Saint Joseph is 24-0 since the start of 2019-20 when scoring at least 80 points but just 2-5 when held to 79 points or less.

UP NEXT
• Following this weekend's series with Saint Joseph, Babson will welcome Mitchell to Staake Gymnasium on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
