Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) scored 12 of his game-high 19 points over the final 5:20 as Babson College earned a hard-fought 72-64 win over visiting Eastern Nazarene College in college men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 7-2 on the year. Eastern Nazarene opens the season at 0-1.
Junior Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Aaron Gao (Bridgewater, N.J.) contributed eight points, six boards and a game-high five assists for the Beavers. Junior James Welch (Needham, Mass.) also finished with eight points in the win.
Senior David Lopez (Miami, Fla.) had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists to pace the Lions. First-year Ka'Shaun Swan (Lawrenceville, Ga.) added 11 points in the loss.
Down 52-51 with less than six minutes to play, Jaworski scored eight consecutive points to give Babson a 59-57 edge with 3:22 to go. Bradanese and Eastern Nazarene sophomore Will Zarges (Quincy, Mass.) traded hoops before Jaworski converted a three-point play to push the margin to 64-59 with 2:12 left. The Green and White went 6-of-8 at the free throw line over the final 92 seconds to put the game away.
Eastern Nazarene scored 11 straight points to build a 13-6 lead five minutes into the contest. The Green and White pulled within one on two free throws by junior Beau Smith (Germantown, N.Y.) but the Lions followed with a 15-4 spurt that included seven points from Buford and four apiece from Lopez and Zarges to grab their largest lead of the game at 30-18 with 6:26 to go before halftime.
The Beavers outscored Eastern Nazarene 16-6 over the final 5:30 of the period to get within 36-34 at the break. The Green and White went in front for the first time since the early moments of the game on a Welch three-pointer just over four minutes into the second half and led 48-46 after a Bradanese dunk with 8:11 remaining.
The Lions responded with six straight points to go back up 52-48 with less than six minutes to go before three-pointers by Welch and Jaworski put Babson in front for good.
The Beavers shot just 40.4 percent from the floor but knocked down 12 three-pointers and outscored the visitors 14-4 at the free throw line.
Eastern Nazarene shot 43.8 percent for the game and finished with a 38-14 edge in points in the paint.
Babson will conclude its season on Sunday when they travel to Quincy to face the Lions at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 17-12 all-time against Eastern Nazarene although Saturday's game was the first between the teams since 2002.
• Saturday's contest was the last inside Staake Gymnasium for Jaworski and fellow senior Matt Pattyson (Doylestown, Pa.). The duo has gone 57-24 over the last four seasons and helped the program return to the NCAA Tournament last winter.
• Jaworski has made 150 triples and needs just one more three-pointer to catch Zach Etten '09 for seventh place on the program's all-time list.
• Babson's 14 made free throws and 19 free throw attempts in Saturday's win are both new season highs.
