One-Hitter Helps MIT Oust Baseball From NEWMAC Tourney

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – MIT senior Max Ockner (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) hurled a one-hit shutout to lead the second-seeded Engineers to a 5-0 victory over third-seeded Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament elimination game on Saturday afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College.

With the loss, Babson sees its season come to a close with a record of 22-18.

Ockner stymied the Beavers recording seven 1-2-3 innings alongside one walk and a game-high eight strikeouts to push his record to 5-2 overall on the season. Ockner retired ten-straight hitters over his first four innings of work compiling six ground outs, two fly outs and two strikeouts. Sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass./Belmont Hill) broke up the potential no-hitter in the fifth with a leadoff infield single to the shortstop. Ockner went on to sit down the next 14 hitters he faced after hitting freshman George Crowley (Watertown, Mass./The Rivers School) with a pitch.

Babson junior Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) suffered the loss on two innings pitched, five hits, five runs (only one earned) and two walks. Junior Derek Richards (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) turned in a solid relief appearance not allowing a run over six innings. Richards scattered five hits, issued three free passes and fanned two batters.

MIT (23-10) erupted for five runs in the third thanks to five hits, including a pair of extra-base knocks. Sophomore Karl Sorensen (Blacksburg, Va./Salem) led off the frame with a double just inside the left field line and came around to score on a double from junior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah/Brighton). Sophomores Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif./Jserra Catholic) and Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and freshman Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) all added RBI singles while sophomore K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn./Web School) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to account for the scoring.

The Engineers had four hitters collected multi-hit games including senior James McKinney (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown), Cornwell, Tew and Rodman.
