Red-Hot Kucher, Pitching Trio Propel Baseball to 13-Inning Win at MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior Chris Kucher belted a three-run double in the top of the 13th inning to help the Babson College baseball team post a huge 5-2 victory over host MIT in the rubber game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series on Tuesday afternoon.

The Beavers (12-10, 6-6 NEWMAC) struck first in the top of the first inning, as senior captain Trevor Boyce led off with a walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Dillon Gonzalez, and later scored on a single to left by sophomore Sean MacPhee.

That lead held up until the home half of the third, when a walk followed by two straight singles enabled MIT (14-4, 10-2 NEWMAC) to tie the contest at 1-1. The Engineers then grabbed their first lead of the contest when Hayden Cornwell launched a solo homer to left center in the eighth.

Babson rallied in the top of the ninth, as senior Pat Matvichuk doubled to left with one out and moved to third on a basehit by Boyce. After Boyce stole second, Gonzalez lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Matvichuk with the tying run.

Neither team would score again until the top of the 13th, when senior John Botelho led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Matvichuk. After back-to-back walks to Boyce and Gonzalez loaded the bases, Kucher blasted a three-run double to left center, snapping the deadlock and giving the visitors a 5-2 lead.

Junior Matt Grenier, sophomore Connor Allen, and first-year Nick Ahearn were all outstanding on the mound for the Green and White. Grenier started and went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three in the no-decision. Allen then came on and pitched 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief, striking out three along the way, and Ahearn (2-0) followed with two innings of one-hit, two-strikeout ball to earn the win.

Kucher finished the day 2-for-5 with a double, two walks, a stolen base, and three RBIs as he extended his hitting streak to eight games. MacPhee added two hits to push his hitting streak to 10, while Botelho, Boyce, Gonzalez, and junior Brendan Collins each joined him with two hits apiece.

The fourth of five MIT pitchers on the day, Henry Zhu suffered the loss after giving up three runs on two hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Nicholas Locascio started and allowed one run on seven hits, walked three and struck out one in six innings.
