Baseball, Springfield Trade Gems in Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College junior Michael Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) and Springfield College junior Eric Chase (Vernon, Conn.) each turned in stellar pitching performances as the Beavers and Pride split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader at Govoni Field on Saturday afternoon. With the split, Babson is now 11-9 overall and 5-6 in league play, while Springfield goes to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the NEWMAC.

Bortolotti (3-1) was masterful in game one, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out seven in a seven-inning complete-game effort. His toughest jam came in the top of the seventh, when a double, walk, and infield single loaded the bases with two outs. However, the junior righthander induced a comebacker off the bat of first-year Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) to finish off the 5-0 victory.

The Beavers got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth, when junior Michael Duffy (Milton, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk, senior Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) followed with a single up the middle, and, two batters later, sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) launched a three-run homer to right-center. Babson then tacked on two more in the fifth, with Kucher plating the first with a sacrifice fly to center and senior captain Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) knocking in the second with a double to right-center.

Senior captain Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener for Babson, while junior Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) and Mike McGowan (Franklin, Mass.) each finished 2-for-3 for Springfield.

Game two saw a major reversal of fortunes, as Chase span six shutout innings of three-hit ball, walking a pair and striking out three. Meanwhile, the Pride scored an unearned run on an RBI-single by junior Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) in the first and then struck twice in the fourth, including another unearned run off Babson starter Brian Swanton (Foxboro, Mass.), to go up 3-0. That would prove to be enough for Springfield, which received one scoreless inning of relief from junior Peter Baranski (Hamden, Conn.) and two more from McGowan as the visitors claimed the split with the 3-0 victory.

Chase (1-3) earned the win on the mound in game two, while McGowan picked up his second save. Swanton (0-2) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in five-plus innings. Sophomore Connor Allen (Madison, N.J.) added four no-hit innings of relief for the Beavers, walking one and striking out one.

McGowan and sophomore Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) each finished with two hits in the nightcap for Springfield, while junior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Beavers.
