Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College scored at least one run in all eight of its at-bats to run away with a 14-4 victory over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball game at Govoni Field on Wednesday.
Junior hurler Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.H.) went the distance on the mound for Babson (8-8 overall, 3-5 NEWMAC), giving up four runs on 10 hits, walked four and struck out three in nine innings of work. It was the first complete game of the season for the veteran righthander, as he improved his record to 2-1 on the year.
Entering the game undefeated in conference play, MIT (11-3 overall, 7-1 NEWMAC) had success against Grenier early on, scoring four runs in the first three innings to build a 4-2 advantage after two-and-a-half. Junior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the first, first-year Nate Rodman (Crovallis, Ore.) belted a solo homer in the second, and sophomore Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) added a two-run double in the third.
The rest of the game would belong to Babson, as Grenier settled down to keep MIT off the board over the final six frames. In the meantime, the Beaver offense poured it on, scoring in every inning en route to the 14-4 victory. Senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) led the hit parade with three safeties apiece, with Boyce finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and Gonzalez adding a 3-for-4 effort with two doubles, one run scored and three driven in. Sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) each added two hits and scored three times for Babson, with MacPhee also knocking in a pair.
Senior Aric Dama (Winfield, Ill.) started and suffered his first loss of the season for MIT, as he fell to 3-1 after giving up five runs – only one of which was earned – in four innings of work.
