Gulesian, Bard Headline Track and Field's Strong Showing at 2013 NEWMAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Babson College track and field squads wrapped up the team portion of their 2012-13 seasons at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Springfield College on Saturday. The men placed fifth overall at the competition, while the women took ninth.

The Beavers' top finish of the day came in the men's 1500 meter run, where sophomore standout Mark Gulesian became just the fourth male in program history to earn All-Conference honors when he placed second overall. His time of 3:58.27 was the third fastest ever by a Babson runner in the event, and it placed him on the All-NEWMAC Second Team, making him the men's first All-League honoree since Justin Bowman in 2009. Gulesian also ran the 800 meters on Saturday, taking eighth with a time of 1:58.30.

In addition to Gulesian's historic day, the men's half of the meet also saw two more individuals qualify for next weekend's NCAA Division III New England Championships. Sophomore Rishav Bansal qualified for regionals in the 100 meter dash with a huge PR of 11.30 seconds, while junior Brian deLeon did the same in the 10,000 meter run, where he placed fourth with a time of 33:07.10. Sophomore Steven Comery also performed well in the 100 meter dash, posting the second fastest time in school history in the prelims with a sprint of 11.24 before placing eighth in the finals in 11.51.

Other top performers on the men's side included first-year Ian MacLean, who placed fourth in the 5000 meters in 15:40.44, sophomore Alex Tighe, who recorded a personal best of 1:01.54 in the 400 hurdles, first-year Chris deLeon, who cut almost 20 seconds off his previous PR with a time of 10:35.96 in the 3000 meter steeplechase, and first-year Cezary Bialon took fourth in the triple jump with a total distance of 42 feet, 8 inches - the third longest in team history. Sophomore Vickrum Nabar added an eighth-place effort in the 400 meter dash in 51.48, and first-year Dominic Esposito finished a busy day by placing eighth in the 110 hurdles in 17.36, 13th in the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet, 8 inches - second only to his own school record set earlier this year - and finishing 12th in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.75 inches. Babson also had two relay teams in action on Saturday, with the 4x100 and 4x400 squads both finishing fifth.

The women's team had a huge day in their half of the meet, highlighted by the spectacular NEWMAC Championship debut of first-year Leisl Bard. The rookie sprinter had a part in setting three school records on the day, including two individual marks. Her top performance came in the 100 meter dash, where she placed ninth, set a new school mark, and qualified for the NCAA New England Championships with a time of 12.89 seconds. In addition to that, she took 10th with another program record of 27.17 seconds in the 200 meter dash while also joining sophomore Brianna Stiklickas, first-year Kim Dvorak, and junior Imani Smith on Babson's record-setting 4x100 relay team, which finished seventh with a new Babson standard of 51.97 seconds. Finally, Bard finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8.75 inches - the second longest in program history.

The Beavers' fourth program record of the day came in the 5000 meter run, where senior Charlotte Margel celebrated her final NEWMAC Championship appearance by smashing her own school mark with a time of 18:15.08. That placed her third overall in the event, just .05 seconds shy of second.

Other highlights for the Babson women included two strong efforts by sophomore Marina Capalbo, who overcame illness to place fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:18.76 and seventh in the 1500 in 4:42.86. Both times were the third fastest in team history. Junior Imani Smith added a stellar fourth-place performance in the 400 meter hurdles, where she posted a season-best time of 1:06.96, sophomore Christianne Kinder placed 12th with a high jump of 4 feet, nine inches, and sophomore Blair Ginden took 13th in the javelin with a season-best throw of 66 feet, 9 inches.
