NEW ORLEANS—After setting three school records and reaching the NCAA National Championships in May, Babson College junior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) was recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday morning, garnering All-Academic honors for the second straight year. Additionally, both the men's and women's squads were awarded with All-Academic team honors for their work in the classroom.
Capalbo, who had the 25th-best time among Division III competitors in the 1500 meters at 4:34.08, qualified for the NCAA National Championships for the second year in a row this spring. She earned All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) honors in the 1500-meter run and All-New England accolades in both the 800 and 1500 meters, while also setting a new program mark in her only 5000-meter event of the campaign on April 5.
Capalbo, who has a concentration in finance, was one of 416 Division III women to earn All-Academic laurels for the 2013-14 season. Honorees must have compiled a 3.30 grade point average or better while competing in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship, or ranking in the top 35 nationally in an event at the conclusion of the regular season.
Both of the Beavers' track & field teams have produced consistent results in the classroom as the women earned their seventh consecutive USTFCCCA award, while the men were recognized for the seventh time in the last eight years. The Babson women, which posted a cumulative GPA of 3.19, were one of 158 Division III squads to garner All-Academic Team accolades, and the men, which posted a 3.31 cumulative GPA, were one of 93 Division III men's teams to earn All-Academic status.
In order to qualify for program honors, teams must compile a 3.10 cumulative GPA or higher and must have competed in at least five meets during the 2013-14 season.
