Baseball Sweeps Coast Guard, 2-1 and 7-6

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Junior Michael Bortolotti scattered four hits and allowed just one run in the opener while Babson jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap and held off Coast Guard to record a sweep of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader winning 2-1 and 7-6.

The opener was a pitcher's duel as Bortolotti (4-2) went the distance and allowed just four hits and an earned run while walking three and fanning seven to pick up the win. Coast Guard senior Nate Toll (3-3) allowed just four singles while walking two and striking out one in taking the loss.

Babson scored both runs in the fourth as senior Trevor Boyce led off with a single and classmate Chris Kucher walked before senior Conor Kortmann bunted them to second and third. Sophomore Sean MacPhee delivered a two-run single for the only runs of the game for the Beavers.

Coast Guard got its run in the fifth as senior Eric Gerken singled, stole second and scored on a single by senior Nolan Gallagher.

In game two, the Beavers scored two in the first on just one hit while taking advantage of a pair of Coast Guard errors before adding four more in the third with RBI singles by Kortmann and freshman George Crowley. Babson also scored a pair of runs when Coast Guard misplayed a bunt, with both runners scoring on a throwing error.

Coast Guard, trailing 6-0, got on the board in the third on an RBI double by senior Tyler Babkiewich. In the fifth, the Bears scored three more as Gallagher had an RBI double before Babkiewich followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season, to cut the deficit to 6-4. The run scored by Babkiewich made him the Bears' all-time leader with 110 career runs scored.

The Beavers added a run in the seventh as Kortmann doubled and MacPhee's RBI single made the score 7-4. Coast Guard got that run right back in the home half on an RBI single by senior Ed Sella, senior Mike Massaro was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The Bears had four hits in the inning, but scored just the one run.

Coast Guard had four more hits in the eighth,  but again came away with just one run, an RBI single by Gallagher cutting the deficit to 7-6. Winning pitcher Matt Grenier got a pop up, his final batter of the game in the eighth with runners on first and third, to end the inning.

Grenier (4-1) worked eight innings and allowed 16 hits and six runs -- five earned, while not walking a batter and striking out two to get the win. Sophomore Connor Allen picked up his first save, allowing just a single in the ninth.

MacPhee led the Beavers (17-14, 10-7) with three hits in game two while Kucher, Kortmann and Crowley each had two hits in the game two win.

These teams complete the three-game series and close out the NEWMAC portion of their schedules tomorrow at 1 p.m with a single game at Babson. Coast Guard and Babson have both already clinched spots in the NEWMAC tournament.
