Suffolk's Offense Too Much For Baseball In 20-8 Setback

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) homered, scored three times and drove in four runs while junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) doubled and tripled to go along with three RBIs as visiting Suffolk University used a seven-run seventh inning on its way to a 20-8 win over Babson College in non-conference baseball action at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon.

Suffolk, which snapped a three-game losing streak, moves to 22-6 overall, while Babson, which has now dropped two straight games, falls to 15-14 on the season.

Senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) had two hits and drove in three runs while classmate Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) and first-year George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) both homered and scored twice for the Beavers.

After both teams put a run on the board in the first inning, the Rams scored three times on just one hit in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Jones and junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) scored on an error following Cunningham's single to right field, and Cunningham came around to score one batter later on a second Babson error for a three-run lead.

The Beavers cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning on the first home run of Crowley's career, and after Suffolk tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, Babson rallied with a three-run fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) led off with a single and after advancing on a balk, scored when Boyce doubled to left center field. Boyce stole third and later scored on a wild pitch, and following a pair of walks and a single by sophomore Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.), Crowley plated Kucher with a sacrifice fly.

After loading the bases with one out in the sixth inning and being unable to score, the Rams broke through in the seventh inning, plating seven runs on just four hits to break the game open. Suffolk sent 11 batters to the plate and scored three times with two outs as junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) produced a run-scoring double to right field and classmate James McConville (Medford, Mass.) drove home a pair with a single to left field to go ahead 12-5.

Kucher led off the seventh inning with his fourth home run of the season and Boyce plated a pair of runs with a two-out single up the middle as Babson got within 12-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Unfortunately, the Rams rallied for eight more runs in the top of the ninth inning, capped off by Cunningham's sixth homer of the season for the final margin.

Sophomore Eli Libby (Sudbury, Mass.) worked three innings to earn his second win of the season while first-year Casey Corollo (Londonderry, N.H.) took the loss for Babson. First-year TJ Fearon (Colchester, Conn.) worked 1 1/3 hitless innings to earn the first save of his career, inducing an inning-ending fly out with the tying run on deck in the eighth inning.

Babson is back in action on Friday afternoon when they open up a pivotal three-game series with Coast Guard in a 3:30pm start at Govoni Field while Suffolk hosts Albertus Magnus in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:00pm.
