Box Score MILTON, Mass. – Senior Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) hit a pair of three-run homers to key a 10-run sixth inning as visiting Babson College outslugged Curry College, 16-10, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.
With its third consecutive win Babson moves to 15-12 overall while Curry drops to 6-15-2 on the season.
Kucher finished with a career-high seven RBI, tying the program record, and senior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) went 5-for-6, scoring three runs and driving in a pair to help pace a 15-hit attack. Sophomore Joe Zanca (Braintree, Mass.) had two hits and drove in three runs, classmate Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) had a pair of hits and scored three times and another sophomore, Sean MacPhee (Framingham, Mass.) had a two-run homer and scored twice. First-year George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) tripled and drew three of the Beavers' 11 walks on the day, while also scoring three runs.
Babson shot out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning off Curry starter Chris Kingsley. Boyce brought home the first run with an RBI double to left. Following a Kucher RBI sacrifice fly, MacPhee launched a two-run home run to right field. Zanca capped off the scoring with a run-scoring single up the middle that plated Crowley.
Some defensive miscues, a wild pitch and a second-inning RBI double from Matt Moore allowed Curry to close to within 5-3 after two full innings. A third-inning single by Zanca brought home Crowley again, upping the Beavers' advantage to 6-3.
But the Colonels pulled even at 6-6 following a third-inning Jack Gonzalez sacrifice fly, a fourth-inning Matt Rodriguez sacrifice fly, and a fourth-inning Sam Barron RBI single that plated Moore with the tying run. The hosts then took a brief 8-6 advantage in the bottom of the fifth after Matt O'Neill stroked a single to center field that scored Moore and Derek Pizarro.
In the top of the sixth, the Babson offense exploded, plating 10 and sending 13 men to the plate to take the lead for good. Kucher followed singles by Gonzalez and Boyce with his first home run of the inning, Kortmann reached on catcher's interference and scored following three straight walks. Junior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) drove a pair home with a single through the left side, later scoring on another single by Boyce to go ahead 13-8. Kucher then capped the inning with another three-run bomb, this time to left field as the Beavers' opened up their biggest lead of the day at 16-8.
Curry got a solo home run from Barron and an RBI double from Tim Lathrop in the bottom of the sixth, but that merely accounted for the 16-10 final, as both teams were held scoreless over the final three innings.
First-year Nick Ahearn (Norfolk, Mass.) relieved Beavers' starter Brody Loughlin (Rockland, Mass.) in the fourth and went the remainder of the way for his third victory of the season. Ahearn gave up eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out three over 5 1/3 innings. Mark Rebello (1-1) absorbed the loss for Curry, pitching the final four innings in relief of Kingsley and Travis Levesque. Rebello allowed five hits, five walks and two earned runs, while striking out two.
Babson is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Wentworth in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match-up. Curry next takes the field on Thursday, hosting Rhode Island College in a non-league tilt at 3:30 p.m.
