Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass.—Senior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass.) and first-year Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass.) combined for four extra base hits and 11 runs batted in as No. 10 Wheaton College swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from Babson College on Saturday afternoon at Sidell Field, winning the first game 11-2 and wrapping the day up with an 8-3 win in game two.
The Lyons, winners of four straight and seven of their last eight games, move to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the NEWMAC while Babson drops to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Wheaton jumped on top of the Beavers in game one as Gusovsky and Lavanchy each drove in a run in the bottom of the second for an early 2-0 lead before breaking the game open with a nine-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. The Lyons strung together six hits, four walks, and an error to take a commanding 11-0 lead in support of starting pitcher Alec Palioca (Wrentham, Mass.). Lavanchy drove in a pair of runs with a triple to right center and senior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass.) smacked a two-run single to left field in the inning.
Babson got on the board in the top of the seventh inning as junior Sean Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) walked, senior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) doubled to left center and classmate Pat Matvichuk (Middleton, Mass.) brought them home with a single to left center.
Palioca moved to 4-1 by tossing a complete-game five hitter, including nine strikeouts on the day. Junior Derek Richards (Framingham, Mass.) took the loss for Babson, giving up nine runs, but just two earned, over 2 2/3 innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season.
The Beavers continued their offensive momentum in game two as senior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) singled home classmate Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wheaton rallied thanks to a Gusovsky sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning, and took a 2-1 lead after four innings when Gusovsky came home on junior Kevin Foley's (Southbury, Conn.) groundout. The Lyons stretched their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four times with two outs as Gusovsky drove home a pair of runs with a double to right center and Lavanchy legged out an inside the park home run one batter later to take a 6-1 advantage.
Kortmann, who went 4-for-4 in game two, scored a run and drove in a pair while first-year George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) collected a pair of hits. Senior Brian Swanton (Foxboro, Mass.) took the loss for the Beavers, giving up three runs and four hits over four innings to fall to 0-1 on the season. Junior Nick Filloramo (Rochester, Mass.) gave up two runs and scattered eight hits over six innings to move to 2-2 on the season.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday afternoon as Babson travels Cambridge to play MIT and Wheaton heads to Worcester to play WPI. Both games are scheduled for a 3:30pm first pitch.
