BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College men's
basketball team fell to visiting Emerson College on Tuesday
evening, 69-66, in a non-conference matchup at Staake
Gymnasium. Junior guard Carlos Negrete (Mission Viejo,
Calif.) led the way for Emerson shooting 7-10 from the
three-point line finishing with a game high 25 points. With the
win, the Lions improve to 3-1 on the season and the Beavers are now
2-2.
Babson controlled the game early going on an 8-0 run to start
the contest. The Lions were able to tie it up, 22-22, with 7:39
remaining in the half and took their first lead of the game, 25-22,
off a Negrete three-pointer just over a minute later. The game
became tied again, 31-31, with 3:42 remaining followed by a 7-2 run
by Emerson to end the period. Emerson entered half time up by a
score of 38-33.
The Lions maintained the lead for the first few minutes of the
second half however the score became tied on four different
occasions throughout the period. Babson's only lead of the
half came off a three-point basket from sophomore guard
Alex Rudolph (Bal Harbour, Fla.) at the 16:18 mark
giving Babson a 45-42 lead.
With 2:35 remaining in the game, a layup by Babson sophomore
Marcus McDermott (Milton, Mass.) tied it for the
final time, 65-65, however another three-pointer from Negrete at
2:13 gave the Lions the three-point lead. McDermott got it to
within two with a free-throw at 1:27, however it wasn't
enough as Emerson's junior guard Andrew Venter (Boston,
Mass.) sealed the deal for the Lions with a free-throw with 12
seconds remaining making the final score, 69-66.
Along with Negrete's 25 points, sophomore Bilali
Kalilou-Mack (Windsor, Conn.) finished with 13 points and junior
Nathan Firn (Wadesboro, N.C.) chipped in with 12 points and four
rebounds. Venter finished with a team high five rebounds, four
assists and three steals.
Babson was led by sophomore Russell Braithwaite
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) who finished with 16 points.
Co-captains Matt Florio (Skillman, N.J.) and
Matt Zoia (Nashua, N.H) along with McDermott each
finished with 10 points each. Florio also added four steals and a
game high eight assists. Rudolph finished with a team high five
rebound and nine total points.
The Beavers will next host Gordon on November 30th for a 7pm
game while Emerson will next visit also at 7pm on November
30th.
