Senior tri-captain Russ Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) totaled a game-high 24 points, making seven out of 10 shots from the field, and added six rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 82-75 win over the visiting Babson College Beavers in men's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gym. Trinity improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Beavers fell to 1-3 with their second loss in a row.
Trinity never trailed in the game, opening up an 8-3 on two three-pointers and a mid-range jumper by senior guard Patrick Hasiuk (Enfield, Conn.) and finishing the first half with a 46-35 lead. The teams combined to shoot .574 from the field in the first 20 minutes, but the Bantams knocked down six first-half treys in 14 tries to amass their advantage. Martin had 15 points and Hasiuk scored 10 points in the first half.
Trinity held a double-digit lead for the first five minutes of the second half, but Babson closed to 60-55 on a lay-up by junior forward Pat Belniak (Sutton, Mass.) at the 11-minute mark. Trinity held off Babson the rest of the way despite a .360 shooting percentage from the floor in the second stanza.
Senior tri-captain Robert Taylor (Dorchester Center, Mass.) scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half and added six rebounds and a game-high six assists, while Hasiuk finished with 15 points. Freshman guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points for the Bantams.
Babson senior guard Brian MacDonald (Beverly, Mass.) paced the visitors with 22 points and six rebounds, while junior swingman Zach Etten (Hollis, N.H.), Kyle MacDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.), and senior forward Greg Bush (East Islip, N.Y.) each notched 15 points for the Beavers. McDonald added a team-high five assists and five rebounds. Trinity outrebounded Babson, 33-24, and the teams combined to commit over 50 fouls in the game.
