MARLBOROUGH, Mass.— After a pair of lopsided victories, No. 5/8 Babson College sophomore
Andrew Almquist (Wakefield, Mass.) and graduate student
Beau Burns (Washington, D.C.) were named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player and Face-Off Specialist of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
The weekly awards are nothing new for the Babson standouts as Almquist received the weekly defensive honor for the second straight week and fourth time this season and Burns was recognized for the fourth consecutive week and fifth time overall.
Almquist was terrific in a pair of starts making 20 saves and posting a 5.43 goals against average and a .667 save percentage to lead Babson to two wins. He made eight saves in just under 51 minutes of action in Tuesday's 18-5 win at UMass Boston and followed it up by making nine of his 12 saves in the first half before the Beavers pulled away to defeat Coast Guard, 16-6, on Saturday.
A starter in all 12 games this season, Almquist has registered an 8.45 goals against average and a .610 save percentage with 155 saves. He ranks second in the NEWMAC in both GAA and save percentage as well as leading the conference in total saves. He has posted an 8.42 GAA and a .637 save percentage with 72 saves over his last five starts. He also ranks 17th in Division III in save percentage and 33rd in goals against average.
Burns won 81.2 percent of his face-offs (26-of-32) and picked up 20 ground balls to help Babson record a pair of double-digit wins. He was a perfect 15-of-15 while scooping up 12 ground balls in Tuesday's 18-5 rout of UMass Boston and went 11-of-17 on face-offs while leading all players with eight ground balls to help the Beavers defeat Coast Guard, 16-6, on Saturday.
Burns has won 149 of his 202 face-offs this spring for a 73.8 winning percentage, which leads the NEWMAC and ranks sixth in Division III. He has also scooped up a team-high 110 ground balls, and his 9.17 ground balls per game lead the conference and rank 20th in Division III.
The Beavers (11-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) host Emerson in a Senior Day affair on Saturday at MacDowell Field at 1 p.m.
