No. 5/8 Men's Lacrosse Overpowers UMass Boston, 18-5

BOSTON—Junior Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led all players with four goals and one assist for five points, classmate Camden Matthews (Westford, Mass.) scored three times and graduate student Beau Burns (Washington, D.C.) was a perfect 15-of-15 on face-off as No. 5 USILA/No. 8 USA Lacrosse overwhelmed UMass Boston 18-5 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at James Cotter Field. 

The Beavers have won two straight games to improve to 10-1 overall. UMass Boston has lost back-to-back contests to slip to 4-5 overall.

Seniors Braden Reilly (Reading, Mass.) and Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) both contributed a goal and two assists as 10 players finished with multiple points and 15 different players scored for the Beavers. Burns led all players with 12 ground balls, sophomore Beck Trafton (Miami Beach, Fla.) won 6-of-10 face-offs and collected three ground balls, and classmate Andrew Almquist (Wakefield, Mass.) finished with eight saves in just under 51 minutes of action. 

Senior Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored twice and added one assist, while sophomore Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.) scored once and handed out two assists for three points to lead the Beacons. Sophomore Hank Alesando (Barrington, R.I.), who picked up five ground balls, and senior Holden Kuzniar (Georgetown, Mass.) tied for game-high honors with three caused turnovers, and junior goalkeeper James Boldy (Wrentham, Mass.) finished with eight saves, five ground balls and two forced turnovers in the first half. 

Rooney scored twice over the opening 2:31 of the contest and Hutchings answered with back-to-back tallies less than two minutes apart to tie the game before the Green and White grabbed control of the game with an 11-0 run that spanned parts of three quarters. Rooney scored consecutive goals for the second time to make it 4-2 ta the 4:04 mark, and junior Andrew Berardi (Orleans, Mass.), Reilly and Matthews scored over the final 2:22 of the first quarter extending the Beavers' lead to 7-2. 

Juniors Sam Sisk (Madison, Conn.) and Cooper Chapman (Hingham, Mass.) scored in the first three-plus minutes of the second, Smith followed with his only tally of the night at the 9:11 mark and Matthews scored back-to-back goals over the final 84 seconds of the period to make it 12-2 at halftime. Senior Tre Ahn (Toronto, Ontario) converted a feed from classmate Luke D'Orsi (Jamestown, R.I.) at 10:07 of the third and first-year Nick Marsh (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) notched his first goal of the night to push Babson's advantage to 16-4 going to the fourth. 

Sophomores David Santa Maria (Watertown, Conn.) and Jake Caldwell (Bernardsville, N.J.) both scored early in the fourth to give the Green and White its largest lead of the night at 18-4 with 12:22 remaining. 

The Beavers finished with decided advantages in shots (66-28), ground balls (52-29) and face-offs (23-4) while clearing at 90 percent (27-of-30). The Beacons were successful on just 47.4 percent of their first-half clears (9-of-19) and finished 19-of-33 for the game. 

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts Coast Guard, while UMass Boston takes on Plymouth State. 

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are 19-3 all-time against UMass Boston and have 11 straight games in the series. 
•    With three points in Tuesday's win, Smith now has 163 for his career tying him for sixth place on the program's all-time list alongside Mike Welch '01. 
•    Burns is the first Babson player to take at least 15 face-offs and win all of them since Conor Maloney '18 went 20-for-20 in a victory over New England College back on March 11, 2015. 
•    Babson is 9-0 this season and 50-2 going back to the start of the 2022 campaign when scoring at least 14 goals.
