Mendoza Honored in Singles, Merson and Zlobinsky in Doubles

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.— The 11th-ranked Babson College men's tennis team swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards on Monday as sophomore Sebastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla./ Cypress Bay) was named Singles Player of the Week and the duo of senior Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J./Tenafly) and first-year Maxim Zlobinsky (Greenvale, N.Y.) was tabbed as Doubles Team of the Week.

Mendoza went 2-1 at number three singles and 2-2 overall last week in California. He beat Artem Manov of Whitman 6-0, 6-2 at number three and fell to Dominik Kaminski of Colorado College at number one in Babson's sweep on Wednesday before securing the clinching point in the Beavers' 4-3 upset of No. 2 Chicago in the opening round of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday, rallying past Alexander Ekstrand for a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 victory.

An All-NEWMAC performer in both singles and doubles last season, Mendoza has an 8-6 singles record this season, including 4-3 in dual matches at number three.

Babson's number one doubles pairing of Merson and Zlobinsky went 4-1 during the team's trip to California. They cruised past Alexander Stage and Niklas Nordahl Jensen of Whitman 6-3 and Lennart Lehmiz and Samuel Dilworth of Colorado College 6-3 on Wednesday before scoring their biggest win of the year by defeating Jack Wong and Robert Zhang 6-1 to help the Beavers upset No. 2 Chicago in the opening round of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday. Merson and Zlobinsky edged Alex Ganchev of and Sacha Maes of Tufts 7-5 in the semifinals of the tournament before falling to Bowdoin's top pairing in their final match of the weekend.

The Babson duo is 7-2 in doubles since pairing up together last month. Merson is 14-4 and Zlobinsky is 14-5 in all doubles matches this season, tied for third most wins on the team.

The Beavers (8-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) resume conference action with a key match at No. 30 MIT on March 31 in the home opener at the Babson Tennis Courts.
