Merson, Zlobinsky Sweep NEWMAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Awards

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.— The 12th-ranked Babson College men's tennis team swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards on Monday as senior Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J./Tenafly) was named Singles Player of the Week and the duo of Merson and first-year Maxim Zlobinsky (Greenvale, N.Y.) was tabbed as Doubles Team of the Week.

Merson went 2-0 at number one singles as Babson split its matches against a pair of nationally-ranked foes. He defeated Niklas von Hellens 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in Saturday's 7-0 sweep of No. 27 NYU and then outlasted Javier Gonzalez 7-6, 7-5 to earn the Beavers' lone point in Sunday's 6-1 loss to No. 3 Tufts.

A transfer from Brandeis in 2024, Merson has put together an 11-1 singles record this season, including 3-0 at number one singles, 2-0 at number two and 6-1 in tournament play. He was All-NEWMAC last year in both singles and doubles when he was 18-5 in singles and 22-6 in doubles.

Merson and Zlobinsky went 2-0 while not dropping a point at number two doubles as No. 12 Babson split its matches against a pair of nationally-ranked foes. They cruised to a 6-0 victory over Shido Ito and Jeh-Lei Fan in Saturday's 7-0 sweep of No. 27 NYU and followed it up with another 6-0 shutout of Javier Gonzalez and Kaetan Mehta in the Beavers' loss to No. 3 Tufts on Sunday.

The Babson duo is 2-1 in doubles since pairing up together last month. Merson is 9-3 in all doubles matches this season and Zlobinsky is 9-4, tied for third most wins on the team.

The Beavers (5-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) return to action on March 18 when they take on Whitman at 3:30 p.m. ET in Claremont, Calif.
