Women's Alpine Ski Captures Giant Slalom at Sunday River

NEWRY, Maine—Junior Julia Wiacek (Little Neck, N.Y.) was the runner-up and four Babson College women's skiers finished among the top 10 to help the Beavers claim first place in the giant slalom at Sunday River Resort on Tuesday afternoon.

Babson finished 2.34 seconds ahead of second-place Castleton and 2.76 seconds ahead of third-place Clarkson to capture its first victory of the season. The Green and White has now won four of its last five MacConnell Division races dating back to the end of last year.

Wiacek posted a two-run time of 2:28.96 that left her less than a second behind the day's top finisher, Elyse Donaghue of Clarkson. First-year Quinn Dennehy (Mendon, Vt.) placed fourth with a time of 2:30.40, junior Sonnie Travis (Park City, Utah) was ninth with a time of 2:33.67, and sophomore Camryn Knowlton (Montreal, Quebec) was just over a second behind her in 10th place with a time of 2:34.71.

Junior Ava Butler (Goshen, Conn.) came in 12th by crossing the finish line in 2:39.00, while classmate Riley Jerome (Bethel, Maine) placed 17th in a time of 2:42.10.

The Beavers return to action on Friday when they travel to Proctor Ski Area for the first of two days of slalom races.
