Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) were all winners in both singles and doubles as 14th-ranked Babson College rolled past No. 29 Colby College, 7-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon inside the Longfellow Wellesley Tennis Club.
With the victory, the Beavers won for the fifth time in their last six matches to improve to 7-2 overall, while Colby dropped its fourth straight to fall to 5-5 overall.
Junior
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) and first-year
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) also posted singles wins for the home team as the Green and White swept all six singles matches.
The Beavers earned the doubles point with wins in two of the three doubles sets.
Olivia Soffer and
Matia Cristiani breezed to a 6-1 victory over first-year Waka Aida (Tokyo, Japan) and junior Isabella Suk (Minnetonka, Minn.) at number one, and
Chaniel Soffer and
Alessandra Cristiani closed out a 6-2 victory over sophomores Jade Finestone (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Michaela Landry (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at number two. Colby managed a victory at number three as junior Amelie Gal (Toronto, Canada) and first-year Ella Novion (Lenexa, Kan.) defeated Stasiowska and Sorrentino, 6-4.
Babson won the first three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the team victory. Olivia had little trouble in defeating Finestone in the top flight, 6-2, 6-0; Matia cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 verdict over Landry at number two; and Chaniel posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Aida at number three.
Alessandra came back from down a set to win a third-set super-breaker over Novion, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2), to push the Babson lead to 5-0. The Green and White completed the singles sweep as Stasiowska took down first-year Anna Rende (San Francisco, Calif.) at number five, 6-1, 6-1, and Sorrentino registered a 6-4, 6-0 win over Gal at number six.
The Beavers will play again on Monday in a make-up match against Salve Regina at 2 p.m. at the Babson Tennis Courts. Colby returns to action on Sunday at No. 6 Middlebury at 11 a.m.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson is now 2-1 against Colby dating back to 2004, and Saturday's dual match was the first between the programs since 2010.
• The Beavers are 5-2 this spring against teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 40.
• The Green and White have won their last 25 home matches against Division III foes dating back to April 24, 2019.
