#11 Women's Tennis

No. 11 Women's Tennis Upends No. 34 Smith, 5-2

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Senior Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) earned points in both singles and doubles to help No. 11 Babson College defeat 34th-ranked Smith College, 5-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action late Friday night. 

Babson, which snapped a three-match skid, improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. Smith slips to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC with the loss. 

Cristiani and first-year Sandra Sikharulidze (Kyiv, Ukraine) beat Ava Emrich and Heidi Cambron 6-3 at number one doubles and the Beavers secured the first point of the match at number three where sophomore Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) and first-year Manuela Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador) edged the Bears' duo of Emily Wang and Olivia Chin 7-5. 

Cristiani breezed past Ayla Hauser 6-3, 6-0 at number one singles and first-year Elizabeth Shu (Sugar Land, Texas) downed Ava Emirch 6-3, 6-3 at number two. The Green and White also got a 6-3, 6-3 victory from sophomore Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) at number four, while first-year Jolie Wang (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at number five. 

Smith was forced to come from behind to earn both of its points in singles. Cambron rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Beavers' first-year Tina Liu (Plantation, Fla.) at number three and Chin posted a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 result over junior Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) at number six.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Wheaton at 12 p.m., while the Bears visit Clark on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers are 20-10 all-time against Smith and have won 16 consecutive matches in the series. 
•    Babson improves to 5-0 this season and has won its last 13 matches dating back to last season when claiming the doubles point. 
•    Friday's match was the seventh in a row for the Beavers against an opponent ranked in the ITA top 40.
