No. 15 Women's Tennis Edged by No. 13 Amherst, 4-3

AMHERST, Mass.—The 15th-ranked Babson College women's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 4-3 loss to No. 13 Amherst College on Saturday afternoon. 

Babson, which had its three-match winning streak snapped, is now 12-5 on the year. Amherst has now split its last four matches to improve to 11-6 overall. 

Senior Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) recorded a 6-4 win over the Mammoths' pairing of Deliala Friedman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Lily Dounchis (Naples, Fla.), who are ranked 22nd in Division III, at number one singles, but the hosts were victorious in the other two matches to steal the doubles point. Sophomore Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and first-year Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) suffered a 6-2 loss to Amy Cui (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Katelyn Hart (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) at number two, while Amherst's Greta Stechschulte (Leawood, Kan.) and Mia Kintiroglou (New Vernon, N.J.) beat the Beavers' paring of sophomore Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) 6-0 at number three. 

Olivia Soffer cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over 41st-ranked Dounchis at number one singles, while Matia Cristiani edged Cui, who is ranked 33rd nationally, 6-4, 6-4 at number two. Alessandra Cristiani also recorded a point in singles defeating Sophie Diop (Boston, Mass.) 6-2, 6-3 at number four. 

Unfortunately, the final three matches went to the Mammoths, two of which were decided in three sets. Junior Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) fell 7-6, 6-4 to Tina She at number five, while Cody Huang (Plano, Texas) bounced back after dropping the second set to slip past Kamal 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 at number six. Chaniel Soffer claimed the first set at number three before falling 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 to Friedman. 

Babson now turns its attention to the NEWMAC Tournament and will host Wheaton in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Amherst concludes its regular season at Connecticut College on Sunday at 10 a.m. 

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 0-5 all-time against Amherst. 
•    Olivia Soffer, who is ranked third in Division III, has won her last 13 singles matches, while Matia Cristiani, the nation's 15th-ranked player, extended her winning streak to 17 on Saturday. 
•    Saturday's match at number one doubles was a rematch of last year's NCAA doubles semifinals where Soffer and Cristiani defeated Friedman and Dounchis 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 on the way to capturing a national title.
