Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) all shot 72 to help the 20th-ranked Babson College men's golf team move into sixth place at the midway point of the Farmingdale State Invitational on the Red Course at Bethpage State Park on Saturday.
The Beavers posted a first round score of 9-over 289 and are one of nine teams within 10 shots of first-place Rochester, which holds a five-shot lead after finishing the day at 2-over 282. Farmingdale State, Rensselaer and No. 6 Huntingdon are all tied for second at 7-over, while NYU is in fifth place at 8-over.
Amaya put together a steady round in his first action since mid-October, making one birdie and three bogeys to finish as one of 14 players tied for 14th position at 2-over. He is joined by Fowler, who was 1-under through his first nine holes, and Berry, who made a pair of early bogeys but was even-par over his final 11 holes of the day.
First-year
Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) carded five birdies, including three straight on Nos. 8-10, and played his final 13 holes in 2-under following a quadruple bogey on the par-5 5th hole on the way to shooting a 3-over 73 that has him tied for 28th. Sophomore
Evan Eichenlaub (Bethlehem, Pa.) made his second birdie of the day on the par-4 18th hole to finish in a tie for 35th position at 4-over after shooting a 74.
Babson begins final round play at 10:39 a.m. on Sunday.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• The average score on the 7,092-yard Bethpage Red Course was 75.10 on Saturday.
• The Beavers played the par-4s at even-par, which ranked first in the 16-team field, but were next-to-last in par-3 scoring at 10-over.
• Vantipalli's five birdies and Amaya's 14 pars were both tied for second among the 88-player field.
