Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) fired a 4-under 68 and senior
Shane Quinn (Morristown, N.J.) made a hole-in-one as part of his 1-under 71 in the final round to help the Babson College men's golf team place 10th in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Sunday at the Pine Lakes Course.
The Beavers posted their third consecutive round under par with a 4-under 284 to finished the 54-hole tournament at 13-under 851. No. 1 Huntingdon was 10 shots clear of the field at 38-under 826, No. 4 Washington & Lee (836) came in second and No. 6 Sewanee (839) placed third. No. 3 Carnegie Mellon (842) took fourth and No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (848) and No. 13 Kenyon (848) tied for fifth.
Berry made six birdies in his final round and matched his low score of the season to move up 29 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 29th place with a 54-hole score of 3-under 213. Quinn aced the 182-yard par-3 sixth hole and bounced back from a triple-bogey on the 13th by birdieing Nos. 15 and 18 to finish under par for the first time this spring. After opening with back-to-back rounds of 72, he tied for 45h place at 1-under 215 for the tournament.
Senior
Colin Fowler (Portland, Ore.), who finished in red numbers in each of the first two rounds, made four birdies and four bogeys to close with a 72 that left him tied for 17th place with a 54-hole total of 5-under 211. Sophomore
Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) closed out a strong tournament by shooting a 3-over 75 to grab a share of 34th place with a 2-over total of 214.
Sophomore
Chad Tordone (Barnstable, Mass.) opened the day with consecutive birdies and made two more late in the round to card a 1-over 73 that helped him move into a tie for 105th overall at 10-over 226.
In addition to the main tournament at Jekyll Island GC, Babson had six players competing in the Indian Mound Invitational. Sophomore
Howie Poon (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) closed with two late birdies to card a second consecutive 72 on the way to finishing third with a 54-hole score of 2-over 218.
Graduate student
Trevor Connolly (South Weymouth, Mass.) and first-years
Luke Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and
Mason Malouf (Boston, Mass.) all shot 74 on Sunday. Connolly came in eighth overall at 9-over 225, while Walker (228) and Malouf (230) placed 12th and 13th, respectively.
Babson returns to action on April 13-14 at the Sam Snead Collegiate in Williamsburg, Va.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• The Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational field featured 21 teams ranked among the top 35 in Division III, and all nine squads that finished in front of the 33rd-ranked Beavers are currently 14th or higher.
• Fowler, Berry and Quinn all posted the lowest 54-hole scores of their respective careers, and the Beavers score of 851 is their lowest since at least 2019.
• The Green and White tied for third in the 30-team field in par 5 scoring at 27-under and tied for eighth in par 4 scoring at 14-over.
• Fowler led all 150 players in par 5 scoring at 11-under, Quinn was first in par 3 scoring at 2-under and Berry tied for fourth in par 4 scoring at 5-under for the tournament.
