Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.—In a match that lasted more than eight hours, No. 24 Wellesley College won the final three singles matches to outlast No. 20 Babson College, 4-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Sunday inside the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
Babson had its three-match winning streak snapped and is now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Wellesley recorded its seventh consecutive victory to improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC.
Babson secured the doubles point by winning the first two matches as first-years
Sarai Dosimond (Carlsbad, Calif.) and
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) cruised to a 6-1 victory at number three before senior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) defeated Sofia Corte-Real (Stamford, Conn.) and Kotistha Modak (Chennai, India) at number one, 7-5.
The Blue recorded its first win at number two doubles as Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and Rianna Mariotti (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won the first three points of a tiebreaker and went on to beat the Beavers' duo of sophomore
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and first-year
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) at number two, 7-6 (6-3).
Each of the first three singles matches went the distance with
Olivia Soffer earning the first point at number one by rallying from 4-3 down in the third to edge Modak, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Cristiani came back from a set down to defeat Corte-Real 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3 at number three for a 3-0 lead in the match before Wellesley got on the board when Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) outlasted
Chaniel Soffer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 at number two singles.
Sophie Buttorff (Tacoma, Wash.) downed Dorismond 6-3, 7-5 (7-6) at number four singles to pull the hosts to within 3-2 in the match, while Nandini Patel (Phoenix, Ariz.) came from behind to upend Stasiowska 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at number five to tie things up at three apiece. The match was decided at number six singles where Babson senior
Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) and Mariotti battled for more than three hours before finishing in a third-set tiebreaker.
Marrioti won the first two points and led 4-1 in the tiebreaker before Starcher battled back to within a point four times before falling 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Babson is back in action on Friday when it hosts Emerson at 2 p.m., while Wellesley hosts Salve Regina next Saturday at 12 p.m.
