No. 17 Women's Tennis Set to Face Four Ranked Foes in California Beginning Sunday

SERIES HISTORY

vs. Chapman: 0-1; dropped a 6-3 decision to the Panthers in California in 2022. 
vs. Middlebury: 0-2; suffered 9-0 losses at Middlebury in 2008 and at home to the Panthers in 2016.
vs. Redlands: 1-0, defeated No. 10 Redlands 5-4 in first career meeting in 2024.
vs. Caltech: 1-1; rebounded from a 7-2 loss to the Beavers in 2022 with 7-2 victory in 2024. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• No. 17 Babson (1-0) opened the spring season with a 4-3 victory over No. 25 Brandeis last Saturday in Waltham.
• Junior Matia Cristiani, sophomore Chaniel Soffer and first-year Alessandra Cristiani were winners in both singles and doubles. Senior Olivia Soffer teamed up with Matia for a triumph at No. 1 doubles for the Beavers, who won two of the three doubles matches.
Matia Cristiani (9-1) leads the team in singles wins, followed by Olivia Soffer (8-3) and junior Grace Starcher (8-3). First-year Sarai Dorismond (7-4) and Chaniel Soffer (7-2) have seven singles wins each and Alessandra Cristiani (6-3) and junior Shyla Khattar (6-2) have six victories apiece.
• O. Soffer and M. Cristiani, the defending Division III national doubles champions, have posted an 8-1 mark in doubles this year. The tandems of Starcher and sophomore Riya Matheroo, as well as Dorismond and A. Cristiani, both went 4-2 in the fall.

SCOUTING CHAPMAN
• The 39th-ranked Panthers (2-2) is coming off a 4-3 loss to No. 30 Vassar on Wednesday at home, where they have played all of their matches to date.
• Sophomore Sydney La at No. 4 and first-year Chloe McBride at No. 5 won their singles matches in straight sets, and senior Brooke Waite came back from a set down to win at third-set super breaker at No. 3.
• La (3-1), McBride (3-1) and Waite (3-0) have all won three singles matches in a row and share the team lead in victories. Junior Makaylee Dahms is 2-0 at No. 6 and senior Alexis Golin is 1-2 at No. 1.
• McBride is 2-2 in doubles, including 2-1 at No. 3, to lead the team in doubles wins. Six others have registered one win apiece.

SCOUTING MIDDLEBURY
• The eighth-ranked Panthers (3-0) begins its trip to California unbeaten, including a 6-1 victory over No. 10 Amherst in a conference match on March 9.
• Seniors Sahana Raman and Nina Farhat tallied a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, and classmate Nathalie van der Reis and junior Lulu Wu clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph at No. 3. Raman, first-year Elsie Van Wieren, Wu, van der Reis, and junior Charlotte McCann swept their singles matches in straight sets.
• Raman (13-1) and Van Wieren (13-1) share the team lead in singles wins while Farhat (11-1) and senior Claudia Miller (10-2) have reached double figures in wins. Raman has a 73-26 career singles record and Miller is 60-17. Raman and Farhat (13-1) are 3-0 in duals at No. 1 doubles, and Miller and Van Wieren (12-3) are 2-1 at No. 2.
• The Panthers won NCAA Tournament matches over Colby-Sawyer (5-0), College of New Jersey (5-0) and No. 11 MIT (5-2) last spring before falling to top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-3) in the quarterfinals.

SCOUTING REDLANDS
• The 22nd-ranked Bulldogs (3-2) are coming off a 6-1 victory over UC-Santa Cruz back on March 7. Previous outcomes included a 4-3 win over No 27 Brandeis and a 5-2 loss to No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
• After sweeping the doubles against Santa Cruz, the Bulldogs got singles wins from senior Deja Brown at No. 3, sophomore Maegan Deng at No. 1, senior Kiana Brady at No. 2, sophomore Lindsey Whelan at No. 4, and sophomore Vrishitha Kumar at No. 6.
• The Bulldogs won NCAA Tournament matches over Alfred (5-0) and No. 26 Mary Washington (5-1) last spring before being defeated by No. 4 Wesleyan (5-1) in the third round.

SCOUTING CALTECH
• The 29th-ranked Beavers (2-1) defeated No. 27 Mary Washington, 5-2, back on March 4 in Pasadena.
• Caltech captured five of the six singles matches to secure the victory. First-year Carissa Gerung at No. 3 and sophomore Hannah Ramsperger at No. 4 started things off with 6-0, 6-0 wins. Sophomore Anna Szczuka at No. 6 and senior Yoyo Benchetrit at No. 1 kept the momentum going, and senior Anika Arora rounded out the victory at No. 5.
• Gerung (3-0) has the early team lead in singles victories, while Benchetrit (2-1), Arora (2-1) and Ramsperger (2-0) have two wins each. First-year Aoi Kunimoto is 2-1 at No. 3 to lead the Beavers in doubles wins, pairing with sophomore Anna Tanaka and first-year Polaris Hayes each for one win.

CHALLNEGING SPRING SLATE
• Babson will play four of its 10 ranked opponents this season on the trip to California after defeating No. 25 Brandeis in the spring opener last week.
• The Green and White will host No. 36 Colby on April 5 before traveling to Atlanta to take on No. 3 Emory and No. 15 Case Western Reserve on April 11-12.
• The Beavers will also host No. 12 MIT in a NEWMAC showdown on April 18 and wrap up the regular season at No. 9 Amherst on April 26.

UPDATING THE RECORD BOOKS
Olivia Soffer and Matia Cristiani have made major impacts on the Babson women's tennis record books, with the majority of the spring season still to play.
• Olivia is the Babson career leader in singles (80), doubles (76) and combined wins (156) while Matia is second in singles (62), doubles (64), and combined victories (126).
• The duo captured 32 doubles victories last season to shatter the single-season program record for doubles wins. Cristiani produced 29 singles victories last year to rank second behind Soffer's 31 in 2022-23, and they rank 1-2 in single-season combined wins (Cristiani-61 last year, Soffer-54 in 2022-23).

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Babson was 13-2 last season when leading after doubles and has won 58 of its last 60 matches with a lead heading into singles dating back to 2018.
• The Beavers are 30-8 in regular season matches going back to the start of the 2022-23 season.

UP NEXT
• Following the four matches in southern California, the Beavers will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition at Smith on March 28 in Northampton, Mass.
