Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) closed with a 3-under 69 and sophomores
Evan Eichenlaub (Bethlehem, Pa.) and
Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) tied for sixth place at 2-under to help the Babson College men's golf team finish as the runner-up at the Tiger Invitational on Monday afternoon.
The Beavers closed with a score of 1-under 287 in the final round to post a 36-hole total of 2-over 578 on the way to finishing 11 shots behind No. 2 Methodist, which came in first at 9-under 567. No. 5 Sewanee recorded the low round of the day at 6-under 282 to come in third just one shot behind Babson, while No. 3 Emory (583) and No. 16 Hampden-Sydney (584) rounded out the top five.
After opening with a 72 on Sunday, Berry made three birdies and just one bogey on the way to firing a 2-under 70. He played his first 10 holes in 1-under and bounced back from a bogey on the par-4 12th hole with back-to-back birdies to close the round to move into a tie for sixth position at 2-under 142.
Eichenlaub followed up an opening round 69 with a 1-over 73 to join Berry in sixth place. He was 2-over through his first nine holes but made birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 18 to get back to even for the day before bogeying his final hole of the round, the par-4 first.
Vantipalli matched the low score of his career and was one of six players to break 70 on Monday thanks to five birdies. After making the turn at 1-over, he played his final nine holes in 4-under, which included birdies on two of his final three holes to move into a tie for 17th place at 1-over 145.
Junior
Colin Fowler (Portland, Ore.) followed up Sunday's 74 with a round over 3-over 75 that included two birdies to finish in a tie for 37th position with a 36-hole total of 5-over 149. Senior
John Baldwin (Little Compton, R.I.) bounced back from a tough opening round with a pair of late birdies to card a 5-over 77 in Monday's final round.
Additionally, junior
Shane Quinn (Morristown, N.J.) competed as an individual in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at the Country Club of Whispering Pines and tied for 16th place with a 36-hole total of 7-over 151.
He opened with a 76 in Sunday's first round and carded two birdies and five bogeys on the way to shooting a 3-over 75 on Monday.
Babson will return to action on April 4 when it travels to the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate at Paradise Point Golf Club in Jacksonville, N.C.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• The Beavers' second-place finish is their highest of the season and their 36-hole score of 578 is their second lowest of the year behind its 576 total at the West Pines Collegiate back on October 7.
• Eichenlaub owns four top-six finishes in five tournament this season and has finished under par in two of his last three events.
• Berry (142) and Vantipalli (145) both recorded the lowest 36-hole scores of their respective careers at the Tiger Invitational.
• Babson was third in the 20-team field in par-5 scoring at 4-under and tied for third in par-4 scoring at 12-over.
• Thirteen of the 20 teams competing at the Tiger Invitational enter the tournament ranked in the top 30 of the Scoreboard Division III computer rankings.
