Men's Basketball Hosts Coast Guard in NEWMAC Quarterfinals Tuesday Night

SERIES HISTORY

•    Babson is 62-28 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to the 1972-73 season.
•    The Beavers have won 22 of their last 24 games against the Bears with one of those losses coming just three days ago in the regular season finale.
•    The Green and White has won four straight games and is 11-1 at home versus Coast Guard since 2012. 
•    The Beavers defeated the Bears, 76-75, in Staake Gymnasium back on January 18. 

POSTSEASON HISTORY
•    Tuesday's matchup will be the first between the teams in NEWMAC Tournament play since 2011. 
•    Babson is just 1-5 all-time in the postseason against Coast Guard, which includes a conference quarterfinal win in 2004 and losses in 1999, 2007 and 2011, all of which came inside Staake Gymnasium. 
•    The Beavers also dropped a pair of CAC Tournament games to the Bears in 1994 and 1995. 

LAST MEETING
•    Eliajah Parent led four players in double figures with 14 points as Coast Guard overcame an early 10-point deficit to defeat Babson, 67-55, on Saturday in New London, Conn. 
•    Cameron Brown, Mitch Shettles and Jordan Frazer each scored 10 points for the Bears, who shot 50 percent in the second half and 46.3 percent for the game in the win. 
•    Graduate student Steph Baxter finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists and sophomore Tyler Lauder posted his first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Beavers, who were outscored 37-22 in the second half. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Despite Saturday's loss, fourth-seeded Babson (12-13) enters the conference tournament having won four of its last six contests. 
•    The Beavers captured their first NEWMAC championship since 2016 last season and have reached the semifinals 10 times in the last 11 tournaments going back to 2012. 
•    Junior Nate Amado (20.2 pts, 6.8 reb) ranks first in the NEWMAC in scoring and sixth in rebounding, Baxter (18.2 pts, 3.7 reb, 3.0 ast) ranks second in the league in scoring and seventh in assists, and sophomore Timmy O'Toole (8.1 pts, 8.9 reb) has posted four double-doubles and is third in the league in rebounding
•    The Green and White ranks first in conference play in offensive rebounds per game (12.8) and is second in both scoring defense (65.6 points) and three-point defense holding its foes to just 29.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc. 

SCOUTING THE BEARS
•    Coast Guard (15-10) has won two straight and three of its last four games entering the NEWMAC Tournament. 
•    The Bears, who had fallen short of the reaching the postseason in each of the last two seasons, are back in the conference playoffs for the first time since claiming the program's third NEWMAC title back in 2020.
•    Shettles (13.9 pts, 4.3 reb) is shooting 48 percent and ranks seventh in the conference in scoring, Declan Rooney (12.4 pts, 4.7 reb, 2.8 ast) has scored in double figures in four of the last five games and Parent (10.1 pts, 2.5 ast) has knocked down 15 three-pointers over the last six contests. 
•    Coast Guard ranks second in NEWMAC play in scoring offense (74.3 points) on 42.8 percent shooting and is committing just 10.8 turnovers per game.

SO WE MEET AGAIN
•    Babson will open the NEWMAC Tournament against its final regular season opponent for the first time since 2015 when it faces Coast Guard on Tuesday. 
•    In 2015, the Beavers defeated MIT, 62-51, at home in the regular season finale and then beat the Engineers 57-47 in a conference tournament semifinal, 57-47, a week later. 

CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE
•    The Beavers, who have captured five conference championships (2002, 2004, 2015, 2016, 2023) under head coach Stephen Brennan, will need to win three games in five days to secure a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. 
•    The Green and White is 8-8 all-time in the quarterfinal round, which includes a 6-4 mark inside Staake Gymnasium. 

TOURNAMENT TESTED
•    Amado is averaging 14.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and one steal while shooting 47.8 percent from the floor and 42.3 percent from behind the arc in five career NEWMAC and NCAA Tournament games. 
•    O'Toole (3.0 pts, 7.3 reb, 1.3 blocks) and Lauder (5.0 pts, 5.7 reb) both started each of Babson's three postseason games last winter.

BEAVER BITES
•    Baxter has scored 15 or more points in 18 of the last 20 games.
•    O'Toole is averaging 4.7 offensive boards and 11.0 total rebounds over the last seven games. 
•    Junior David Cross has contributed 9.0 points on 47.1 percent shooting from three-point range over his last four outings. 
•    Sophomore Mark Woolhouse has connected on at least one three-pointer in four straight contests. 

MISSING PIECES AGAINST THE BEARS
•    Only Baxter (16.5 pts, 6.0 reb) and sophomore Jeremiah Paul (6.0 pts) started both of Babson's regular season games against Coast Guard. 
•    Amado finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the 76-75 win on January 18 but has been out due to injury since January 20, while Lauder and O'Toole both missed the first matchup in Babson Park. 

TOUGH ON D
•    Over the last seven games, Babson is allowing just 59.3 points per game and 0.87 points per possession. 
•    The Beavers have held their last seven foes to just 25.9 percent shooting from three-point range and are allowing less than 10 offensive rebounds per outing. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    The Beavers are 10-3 this season when shooting better than 40 percent from the field. 
•    Babson is 10-4 when outrebounding its opponents. 
•    The Green and White is 12-6 when scoring at least 60 points. 
•    The Beavers are 8-3 at home, which includes a 6-2 mark against league foes.
