• Babson finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots while each team took three corner kicks.
HEAD COACHES
• Babson is led by 14th-year head coach
Nellie Pineault, who has achieved a 124-75-36 record (.604), including a 63-32-22 mark against NEWMAC opponents. The Green and White has finished at .500 or better in 11 of her 12 seasons, and she has led the program to 10 or more victories on six occasions.
• Johnson & Wales is guided by eighth-year head coach Chris Flint, who has recorded a 109-36-9 mark (.737) with the Wildcats, and a 273-208-410 mark in 25 seasons as a head coach including stints at Bryant and MCLA. He has led the Wildcats to three consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
A LOOK BACK
• Babson wrapped up the 2022 campaign with a 14-4-1 overall record and a 7-2-1 mark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), posting the most conference victories in program history.
• The second-seeded Beavers were knocked out of the NEWMAC Tournament in the semifinals in a 3-2 loss to eventual champion Emerson.
• The Green and White earned their first national ranking by the United Soccer Coaches and spent multiple weeks during the season ranked in the top 10.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (0-0) returns seven starters and 21 veterans from last year's squad but will have a new look in goal following the graduation of three-year starter and 2022 first team All-American
Morgan Fedosiewich '23.
• The Beavers welcome back a pair of All-NEWMAC performers in junior back
Laura Lukowicz and graduate student forward
Morgan Krauss. Lukowicz earned her second all-conference honor and first first-team recognition after helping lead a Beaver defense that posted a team 0.79 goals against average and 10 shutouts. Krauss scored five goals for the second straight season and added four assists for 14 points to finish third on the team and 11th in the NEWMAC in scoring.
• Shaw is a returning two-year starter and will play a key role on defense for the Beavers. Knauf (5-2-12) and Ferrantino (4-3-11) are returning starters at forward and should be solid contributors to the Babson offense, and senior
Cassie Lawson (0-1-1) is a two-year starter in the midfield for the Green and White.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
• Johnson & Wales (0-0) is coming off a 19-3-3 campaign in 2022, recording a 13-0-0 mark in GNAC contests and setting a program record for victories. The Wildcats posted consecutive wins over Saint Joseph (Conn.), Saint Joseph's (Maine) and Lasell to claim a third straight conference championship and the program's fourth NCAA Tournament berth, where they were defeated by RIT in the first round, 3-1, snapping an 18-game winning streak.
• The Wildcats, who will have to overcome the loss of first team All-America and the program's all-time scoring leader Jordan Restivo, welcome back four All-Region performers in juniors Emily DeRoehn, Carly McCrumb and Angelina Oliveira and senior Trina Capezza.
• DeRoehn (5-4-14) was a first team All-America and GNAC Defensive Player of the Year after anchoring a unit which allowed just 19 goals and posted 13 shutouts. Oliveira (7-13-17) and Capezza (2-5-9) give the Wildcats a solid midfield tandem, while McCrumb posted a 12-3-1 record with a 1.02 goals against average, going more than 600 minutes in the first half of the season without giving up a goal.
PRESEASON POLLS
• The Beavers were picked to finish third in the NEWMAC preseason coaches' poll that was released last week.
• The Wildcats were unanimous selections to capture their fourth straight conference championship when the GNAC preseason coaches' poll was released on Tuesday.
CHALLENGING SCHEDULE
• Babson will face five teams that appeared in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, beginning with its season opener vs. JWU.
• The Beavers will also face NCAA tournament teams Williams on September 10, Bowdoin on October 1, and NEWMAC opponents Emerson on October 11 and MIT on October 18.
SEASON OPENERS
• Babson has posted a 14-5-2 record in its last 21 season openers, including seven straight wins from 2001-07.
• The Beavers were 4-0-2 from 2013-18, and last year's win over JWU snapped a two-game skid in season debuts.
WINNING WAYS
• The Beavers have finished .500 or better in 17 of the last 18 seasons, posting at least nine victories all 17 campaigns.
• Babson's 14 wins in 2022 were the most since going 14-4-5 in 2015 on the way to earning the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.
• The 14 victories last fall were also tied for the third most in program history behind the Beavers' 1992 squad that finished 18-1-1 and the 1993 team that went 17-2-0.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Babson was 12-1-1 last fall when conceding one goal or fewer.
• The Green and White had not trailed at halftime in 25 straight games before falling behind to Emerson in the NEWMAC semifinals last year.
UP NEXT
• The Beavers will be at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Tuesday for the home opener against Brandeis, beginning at 4 p.m.
