Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Mark Woolhouse (Lebanon, N.J.) scored a career-high 18 points to lead five players in double figures and Babson College shot a season-best 57.1 percent on the way to defeating visiting MIt, 92-57, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
With its ninth win in the last 10 games, Babson improves to 17-8 overall and 10-4 in league play and will be the third seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. MIT closes the season at 4-19 overall and 2-12 in league play.
Senior Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) finished with 15 points and five rebounds and sophomore Aidan Horan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) contributed 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting to go along with six boards, three assists and three steals for the Beavers. Graduate student Ryan Cibull (Alameda, Calif.) scored 10 points and dished out four assists, while first-year Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the win.
First-year Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) scored 18 points, classmate Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and sophomore Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) chipped in with 17 points and two steals to lead the Engineers.
The Green and White led 19-17 with 9:08 to go in the opening stanza before closing the half with a 26-3 run to take control of the game. Kirkpatrick scored eight straight points to give the Beavers their first double-digit lead, Cibull canned a three-pointer to make it 31-20 and Horan scored seven of the final 14 points of the period, including a dunk in transition to extend the lead to 45-20 at the break.
Babson's lead never went below 24 in the second and Cibull and Horan combined for 10 straight points to stretch the advantage to 67-33 with 9:41 remaining. Sophomore David Cross (Cinnaminson, N.J.) followed up a bucket by Lauder with a three-pointer and then converted a steal into a transition layup to give the Beavers their largest lead of the afternoon at 74-35 with 8:21 to go.
The Green and White made a season-high 40 field goals and shot 62.3 percent (33-of-53) on its two-point attempts in the win. The Beavers outscored the Engineers 50-18 in the paint and finished with 42-21 edge on the glass.
MIT shot just 38 percent from the floor but did finish 13-of-13 at the free throw line.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it travels to second-seeded Emerson for a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal at 7 p.m.
