Men's Basketball Falls to Chicago, 73-64

Box Score

CHICAGO—Graduate student Ryan Cibull (Alameda, Calif.) scored a season-high 21 points for visiting Babson College but the University of Chicago used a late 14-1 run to defeat the Beavers, 73-64, in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside the Ratner Athletics Center.

Babson, which lost for just the second time in its last seven outings, slips to 7-4 on the year, while Chicago improves to 7-4 with its fourth win in the last five games.

Cibull went 7-of-11 from the floor and added two steals, while senior Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) came off the bench to finish with 13 points and a team-high three assists for the Beavers, who played without their leading scorer, sophomore Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.). Junior John Gorgol (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also scored a season-high 10 points to go along with eight rebounds in the loss.

Senior Bryce Hopkins (Palentine, Ill.), sophomore Thomas Kurowski (Niles, Mich.) and junior Elliot Paschal (Rogers, Ark.) all scored nine points to lead a balanced Maroons' attack that featured eight players finishing with at least seven points.

Chicago erased an early 8-3 deficit with a 13-2 run to take a 16-10 lead on a free throw by sophomore Ezra Moos (Toronto, Ontario) midway through the opening half. The Green and White got within 20-19 thanks to a three-point play by Kirkpatrick at the 4:18 mark and used back-to-back jumpers by senior Aaron Gao (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Kirkpatrick and five late points from Cibull to cut its deficit to 29-28 at the half.

The Maroons, who opened the second half with a 7-0 run, got a triple from Hopkins to stretch their advantage to 42-33 just over four minutes into the period and took their first double-digit lead of the afternoon on a layup by sophomore Arrish Bhandal (San Jose, Calif.) with 13:09 to play. Gorgol and first-year Mark Woolhouse (Lebanon, N.J.) combined for the Beavers' next 10 points to get back within 48-45 and Cibull canned a three-pointer to cap a 15-5 spurt that tied the game at 50 with 8:35 remaining.

Chicago answered with a decisive 14-1 run that included back-to-back triples by Moos and first-year Eamonn Kenah (Atlanta, Ga.) to take its largest lead of the game at 66-53 when Hopkins knocked down a pair of free throws with 4:00 to play. The Beavers closed to within 68-62 on a layup by Woolhouse with 2:21 left but Paschal grabbed an offensive rebound and went 2-of-2 at the free throw line with 50 seconds to help put the game away.

The Green and White shot 44.6 percent for the game and outscored Chicago 32-18 in the paint. The Maroons shot 46.5 percent from the floor and went 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from beyond the arc in addition to outscoring the Beavers 23-8 at the free throw line.

Babson returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Emerson for its NEWMAC opener at 7 p.m., while Chicago travels to Washington University next Saturday to begin UAA play.
