Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine—Sophomore James McGowan (Westwood, Mass.) scored 26 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to help Bowdoin College rally for an 82-74 win over visiting Babson College in non-conference men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon inside Morrell Gymnasium.
Babson had its modest two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 4-3 on the year while Bowdoin improves to 3-2 with its third consecutive victory.
Sophomore Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) scored 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Beavers. Senior Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) added 16 points and three steals, while sophomore Parker Mason (Portsmouth, R.I.) chipped in with 12 points and five boards in the loss.
McGowan finished 9-of-18 from the floor and went 8-of-11 at the free throw line to pace four Polar Bears in double figures. Senior Xander Werkman (Spokane, Wash.) contributed 18 points and tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds, junior Michael Simonds (Falmouth, Maine) scored 16 points to go along with three steals, and first-year Nolan Bessire (Santa Rosa, Calif.) came off the bench to add 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Green and White got back-to-back three-pointers from Kirkpatrick and Mason to build a 21-14 nine minutes into the first half and responded to a hoop by Bessire with a 9-1 spurt that extended the margin to 30-19 on another triple by sophomore David Cross (Cinnaminson, N.J.) with 6:25 to go before halftime. Simonds knocked down a pair of trifectas to key a 12-4 Bowdoin run that trimmed the margin to three, but six straight points from Kirkpatrick and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Amado sent the Beavers into the locker room leading 45-39.
Mason and Amado combined for all the scoring during an 11-5 run that gave Babson its largest lead of the afternoon at 56-44 with 17:35 to go in the contest. The Beavers were held without a hoop for over six minutes and their advantage was down to just two before Cross converted a three-point play to end the drought making it 59-54 with 11:17 to play.
Werkman tied the game at 61-all with 9:14 left and McGowan gave the hosts their first lead of the game with a three-pointer on the following possession. Workman answered a bucket by Amado to make it 66-65 at the 8:13 mark and McGowan followed with seven straight points to push the Bowdoin lead to 73-65 with 5:56 remaining.
Babson got as close as four on a three-pointer by first-year Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) with 5:18 to play but came up empty on its next four trips and was unable to get closer than five over the final two minutes.
The Beavers shot 43.8 percent from the floor but struggled from beyond the arc finishing just 7-of-25 (28 percent). The Polar Bears shot 51.7 percent, outscored the Green and White 17-3 at the free throw line and finished with a 42-37 edge on the glass.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Bates at 7 p.m., while Bowdoin takes on Colby on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

• The Beavers had their three-game winning streak against Bowdoin snapped in Sunday's loss and are now 20-22 in the all-time series.
• Babson pulled down 11 offensive rebounds on Sunday and has now finished with 11 or more in 11 straight games going back to last year.
• Prior to Sunday, the Beavers had been 3-0 this season when leading at halftime.
