Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.—Senior Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) and sophomore Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) both scored 20 points to lead Babson College to an 89-58 win over Salem State University in the consolation game of the New England Big 4 Challenge on Sunday afternoon inside Cousins Gymnasium.
With the win, Babson improves to 3-2 on the year, while Salem State drops to 1-4 overall.
Amado grabbed seven rebounds, Kirkpatrick dished out a game-high eight assists and both players were 8-of-13 shooting to pace the Beavers. First-year Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) contributed nine points and six boards, while senior Aaron Gao (Bridgewater, N.J.) added eight points and a career-high five steals in the win.
Senior Conner Byrne (Melrose, Mass.) scored 19 points and classmates Chris MacDonald (Wakefield, Mass.) and Jaden Castillo (Lawrence, Mass.) added 11 points apiece for the Vikings.
The Green and White trailed for just 20 seconds early in the opening half and used a 14-4 run that included points from five different players to build a 30-19 lead after a three-pointer by sophomore Parker Mason (Portsmouth, R.I.) with 6:16 to go before the break. Salem State pulled within six on a three-point play by Byrne but Kirkpatrick, O'Toole and Amado canned triples late in the stanza to send the Beavers into the locker room with a 43-35 advantage.
The Beavers got five points from Amado and three-pointers from Mason and Gao during an 11-0 spurt that pushed the margin to 54-35 less than three minutes into the second half. The Vikings cut their deficit to 58-42 on a dunk by Byrne only to see Babson respond with a 13-2 burst that included triples from Kirkpatrick, Gao and sophomore Aidan Horan (Orchard Park, Mass.) to extend its lead to 71-44 at the 11:02 mark.
The Green and White took its biggest lead of the game at 80-47 with 7:32 to play when junior Jack Staiti (Wayland, Mass.) followed up a three-pointer by sophomore David Cross (Cinnaminson, N.J.) with a transition layup.
The Beavers shot 48.6 percent for the game and drilled a season-high 14 three-pointers. They also finished with a 41-31 edge on the glass and turned 20 Salem State turnovers into 30 points.
The Vikings shot 42.4 percent on the afternoon and outscored the Green and White 34-32 in the paint.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Amherst at 1 p.m., while Salem State takes on Gordon on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
