Men's Basketball Rolls Past Coast Guard, 89-72

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) scored a game-high 21 points and first-year Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) posted his third double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds Saturday afternoon as Babson College rolled past the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 89-72, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action inside Staake Gymnasium.

With the win, Babson improves to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Bradanese made 10-of-14 from the floor and Amado converted 7-of-9 while sophomore Kieran Dorney (Garden City, N.Y.) finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine boards, knocking down four 3-pointers. First-year Rob Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) added 11 points off the bench and graduate student Spencer Cline (Mason, Ohio) made three shots from beyond the arc to finish with nine points.

First-year Ben Yagey (Highlands Ranch, Col.) led the Bears with 16 points off the bench, while classmate Declan Rooney (Seattle, Wash.) added 14 points and junior Madison Maloney (Wilmington, N.C.) chipped in with 13. First-year Cameron Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) came off the bench and recorded his first double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Babson used an early eight-point run to take a 10-4 lead, capped by a dunk by Amado, but the Bears came back with a 10-3 run to pull ahead 14-13 on a layup by Brown after he grabbed an offensive rebound. The Beavers answered with a 13-2 burst of their own, keyed by a pair of three-pointers by Dorney to take a 24-16 lead at the midway point of the half.

A Dorney jumper and back-to-back baskets by Bradanese pushed the Beaver lead up to 12 at 30-18. The Babson lead got as high as 13 points three times with four minutes remaining, but Coast Guard got back to within seven (41-34) with 1:21 remaining. A Bradenese layup in the final minute gave the hosts a 43-34 lead at the break.

Bradanese had 12 first-half points and Dorney and Amado dropped in nine apiece while Yagey scored nine for the visitors. Babson shot 54.5 percent in the first 20 minutes while holding Coast Guard to a 38.2 percent clip.

The Bears got to within six points early in the second half after a layup by Maloney, but an eight-point run by Babson, including threes by Bradanese and Dorney and a layup by Amado, pushed the margin up to 14 points, 53-39. A jumper by Dorney and layups by Bradanese and Mitchell gave Babson its largest lead to that point, a 21-point bulge, at the midway point of the second half.

Coast Guard got as close as 15 but a 9-1 run by Babson pushed the margin back up above 20 points 73-52, and the Beavers controlled play the rest of the way.

The Beavers shot 52.2 percent from the field and 41.7 from three-point range, making more than half of their shots for the third time in their last five games. Coast Guard shot at just a 37.8 percent rate and Babson had a 44-39 advantage on the boards.

Babson plays its next three games on the road, beginning Wednesday at Clark at 7 p.m. Coast Guard plays a make-up game on Monday at Wheaton, starting at 6 p.m.
