Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. — Graduate student Colin McNamara (Arlington, Mass.) scored 23 points to lead a group of five players who scored in double figures as No. 23 WPI snapped Babson College's four-game winning streak with an 88-57 victory Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action inside Harrington Auditorium.
WPI won its seventh game in a row to improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC, while Babson drops to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
McNamara shot 9-of-18 from the floor and added five rebounds and five assists while sophomore John Adams (Douglas, Mass.) scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. First-year Aidan Callahan (Rowley, Mass.) made 6-of-8 shots and finished with 13 points and graduate student Kahleb Downing (Middletown, Conn.) and senior Logan O'Donnell (Fishkill, N.Y.) contributed 11 points apiece.
Senior Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) topped the Beavers with 14 points, making 7-of-10 from the field. First-year Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) scored eight points and senior James Welch (Needham, Mass.) added seven points off the bench. A tenacious WPI defense limited Babson to 35.5 percent shooting, second lowest this season, and a season-low 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from three-point range.
WPI went on a 15-2 run in less than three minutes midway through the first half to take a 23-14 lead, on the strength of seven points from McNamara, five from O'Donnell and three from Downing, with all three hitting a long ball. The Engineers extended the lead to 12 points, but the Beavers got back to within five (34-29) on a layup by Bradanese and a pair of baskets from Welch, including a three.
WPI outscored Babson 13-7 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 47-36 lead at the break. McNamara scored 16 points in the first half for the Engineers and Callahan and O'Donnell had nine apiece, while Bradanese finished with 10 points for Babson on 5-of-6 shooting.
Adams hit a pair of buckets for WPI to open the second half to push the margin up to 15 points. After Bradnese and junior John Lowther (Hingham, Mass.) traded baskets, six straight points by the Engineers extended the lead to 19 points (59-40) with 14 minutes to play. A layup by Callahan and a three-ball by McNamara a minute later gave WPI a 22-point advantage and Babson got no closer the rest of the way.
WPI shot 50.7 percent from the field (35-of-69) and knocked down eight three-pointers while posting a 46-33 advantage on the boards.
Babson plays its next three games on home court inside Staake Gymnasium, beginning this Saturday against Wheaton at 1 p.m. WPI travels to Emerson on Saturday, also for a 1 p.m. tilt.
