Men's Lacrosse Runs Away from Wheaton in Season Opener, 20-2

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Ryan Donovan (Cohasset, Mass.) finished with four goals and one assist and first-year Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 14-of-19 face-offs and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls as visiting Babson College rolled to a 20-2 win at Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

Babson opens the season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, while Wheaton starts the season at 0-1 overall and in the NEWMAC.

Senior Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had three goals and one assist, while classmate Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.), sophomore Wills Jordan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and first-year Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.) all scored twice for the Beavers. Graduate student Sean Smith (Pasadena, Calif.) picked up five ground balls and was one of three players to record two assists, senior Will Messner (South Kingstown, R.I.) recorded two assists and two caused turnovers, and classmate Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior Austin O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) combined to make four saves in the win.

Junior Alec Morin (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Robert Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) each had a goal for the Lyons. First-year Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) picked up four ground balls and led all players with three caused turnovers, while sophomore Cory Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass.) made 12 of Wheaton's 13 saves over the first 39 minutes.

Donavan opened the scoring off a feed from Messner with 6:22 to go in the opening quarter, and Sipes, Karsh and sophomore Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) all added goals over the final 2:07 of the stanza to give the Green and White a 4-0 lead. Tallies by Jordan and Sipes made it 6-0 just over two minutes into the second and Donovan followed up a man-up goal by Sullivan with his second of the day to give the Beavers a 7-1 advantage at the break.

O'Hanlon scored three of Babson's first four goals to open the third quarter, and junior Peter Chisholm (Westford, Mass.) followed Donavan's third tally with his first goal as a Beaver with 64 seconds left in the period to stretch the margin to 13-1. The Green and White scored four times over the first five minutes of the fourth as senior John Calicchio (Gulfstream, Fla.) capped the 10-goal run by converting a feed from Smith to make it 17-1 with 10:49 remaining.

First-year Alex Fairman (Fayetteville, Ark.) notched his first collegiate goal with 8:18 to play and sophomore Dan Neill (Black Earth, Wis.) set up Donavan's finally tally and scored the first goal of his career for the final margin.

The Beavers won 20-of-26 face-offs on the afternoon and finished with a 46-21 edge in ground balls. The Green and White also was successful on 21-of-23 clears in the victory.

Both teams are scheduled to return to action next Saturday as Babson hosts Emerson at 2 p.m., while Wheaton travels to Coast Guard at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 27-9 all-time against Wheaton and have won 12 of their last 13 versus the Lyons dating back to 2011.
• Sipes has now scored at least one goal in each of his seven games in a Babson uniform.
• In addition to Sunderland's performance, junior Jack Gregory (Mendham, N.J.) won 6-of-7 face-offs for the Green and White.
• Saturday marked the first time the Beavers have scored 20 goals since March 30, 2019, when they defeated Mass. Maritime, 20-2.
• Babson got goals from 12 different players and had 15 players record a goal or an assist in Saturday's win.
