Men's Hoops Outlasted by Saint Joseph in 3OT, 92-82

Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn.—Visiting Babson College rallied from a 12-point deficit with just over five minutes to go in regulation before falling to the University of Saint Joseph, 92-82, in three overtimes on Sunday afternoon in men's college basketball action inside the O'Connell Center.

Babson, which dropped Saturday's series opener to the Blue Jays 73-67, slips to 5-2 on the year. With two consecutive wins, Saint Joseph improves to 2-2 overall.

Senior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) played 48 minutes and recorded his first double-double of the winter with 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Beavers. Sophomore Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) finished with 19 points, six assists, five boards and four steals, while junior Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) scored 15 points and blocked a season-high four shots. Classmate James Welch (Needham, Mass.) also came off the bench to add 14 points in a losing effort.

Senior Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.) scored 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting and added a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Jays. Junior Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) finished with 21 points, eight boards and seven assists, while classmate Ryan O'Neill (Litchfield, Conn.) added 17 points.

The Green and White trailed 58-46 after a bucket by O'Neill with 5:19 to play before closing regulation with a 16-4 run to force overtime. Welch had eight points during the spurt and Jaworski tied the game with a pull-up jumper from the right elbow with 35 seconds left sending the game to an extra session.

The teams combined for just one field goal in the first overtime before both scoring on three of their first four possessions to begin the second extra stanza. O'Neill gave Saint Joseph a 77-74 lead with a triple from the left corner with 46 seconds to go, but Jaworski answered with another pull-up jumper and Bradanese followed one free throw by Martin with a layup to tie the game at 78-78. Martin's contested jumper on the ensuing possession was no good sending the game to a third overtime.

Bradanese gave Babson a 79-78 edge 31 seconds into the period, but sophomore Jalen Saumels (Franklin, Mass.) and Powell combined for the next six points to put the Blue Jays back in front 84-79 with 3:01 to play. Bradanese cut the deficit to 85-82 with a layup at the 1:55 mark, but the Beavers would get no closer as Saint Joseph went 7-of-8 at the free throw line over the final 92 seconds.

Babson led by as many as six in the opening half and was up 29-24 at the break before the Blue Jays opened the second half with a 14-4 run. Jaworski cut the Beavers' deficit to 47-44 with a three-pointer at the 9:40 mark, but O'Neill scored six points during an 11-2 burst that stretched the Saint Joseph advantage to 12.

The Green and White shot a season-low 39.3 percent from the floor and were just 5-of-33 from three-point range (15.2 percent).

The Blue Jays shot 40.7 percent from the floor and outscored the Beavers 54-38 in the paint and 23-11 at the free throw line. They also finished with a 61-44 edge on the glass.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mitchell at 7 p.m., while Saint Joseph will take on the same Mariners team on Friday at 7 p.m.
