Men's Hoops Drops NCAA Tournament Opener to Ithaca in OT, 94-88

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Sophomore Skylar Sinon (Byram Hills, N.Y.) gave Ithaca College its first lead since midway through the first half with consecutive three-pointers in overtime as the Bombers rallied for a 94-88 win over Babson College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening at Tarble Pavilion.

Babson, which suffered a pair of overtime losses over its final three games, ends the year at 20-7 overall. Ithaca, which won its 12th consecutive game, improves to 24-5 and will take on No. 1 Swarthmore in the second round on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

Junior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) posted a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds to pace five Beavers in double figures. Sophomore Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) finished with 13 points and nine boards, while senior Jack Coolahan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Crew Ainge (Wellesley, Mass.) added 12 points apiece. First-year Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) scored nine of his 11 points after halftime in the loss.

Sinon finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for Bombers, while senior Riley Thompson (Newtown, Pa.) added 23 points. Senior Sebastian Alderete (Miami Springs, Fla.) had 16 points, nine boards and four dimes, and classmate Jake Mitchell (Potsdam, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The Green and White was up three at the break and scored on four of its first five possessions to stretch the margin to 51-41 with 16:31 to go. Ithaca would get within six, but Coolahan and Kirkpatrick would knock down triples and first-year Aaron Gao (Bridgewater, N.J.) would add a layup to give the Beavers a 65-53 lead, their largest of the night, with 12:43 remaining.

Babson made just one field goal over the next seven-plus minutes but remained in front 74-71 on a layup by Ainge with 5:33 left in regulation. Ainge answered a hoop by Mitchell with a pull-up jumper in the late, Sinon countered with a three-pointer as the Bombers pulled even at 76-76 with 2:25 to go.

The Green and White went back up two on a tip-in by Bradanese with 1:14 left, but Alderete converted a driving layup with 5.3 remaining to force overtime. Jaworski scored the first hoop of the extra session before Ithaca followed with an 8-0 run that included two straight triples by Sinon to go in front 86-80 with 1:29 to play.

Jaworski scored 12 of Babson's first 14 points and put up 17 in the opening half. The Beavers shot 50 percent over the first 20 minutes and led by as many as eight late in the stanza before settling for a three-point edge at the break. 

The Bombers went 8-of-10 at the free throw line over the final 37 seconds to put the game away.

• Friday's matchup was the first all-time between Babson and Ithaca.
• The Beavers are 4-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament first round games.
• Coolahan's 87 three-pointers rank third on Babson's single-season list, and his 503 points this winter are the 13th highest total in single-season program history.
• The Beavers are 2-3 in overtime games this season and 5-5 in games decided by six points or less.
• Prior to Friday, Babson had been 13-0 this year when four or more players scored in double figures.
