Box Score BOSTON—Senior Jack Coolahan (Newtown, Pa.) registered his first career double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 22 Babson College defeat Emerson College, 92-77, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Brown-Plofker Gymnasium.
With its eighth win in the last nine games, Babson improves to 20-4 overall and 10-3 in the conference. Emerson, which has dropped two straight games slips to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) scored 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while first-year Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) added 13 points and three assists for the Beavers. Junior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) chipped in with 11 points, eight boards, three assists and two steals in the win.
Sophomore Zach Waterhouse (Hampton, N.H.) poured in 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while senior Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.) scored 21 points to pace the Lions. Sophomore Jarred Houston (Norwood, Mass.) contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in the loss.
Emerson raced out to a 7-0 lead and was up by as many as 10 over the first nine minutes of the opening half. Junior Crew Ainge (Wellesley, Mass.) and Jaworski canned back-to-back triples as part of a 12-3 spurt that cut Babson's deficit to 26-25 at the 7:14 mark, and sophomore Beau Smith () followed up another three-pointer by Kirkpatrick to give the Beavers their first lead at 32-30 with 4:55 to go until halftime.
The Green and White was up 40-37 at the break and got a pair of three-pointers from Coolahan as part of a 10-3 burst that extended the lead to 52-44 four minutes into the second half. The Lions got back within three at 58-55 on a layup by Waterhouse with 10:14 remaining before the Beavers countered a 15-0 spurt to put the game away.
Coolahan scored six consecutive points, Bradanese contributed a pair of hoops in the paint, and junior Matt Pattyson (Doylestown, Pa.) capped the run with transition three to make it 73-55 with 7:11 to play. Emerson cut its deficit to 12 with 4:37 left, but Ainge, Jaworski and Kirkpatrick all knocked down a pair of free throws over the next two minutes to give Babson its largest lead of the night at 85-66 with 2:33 to go.
The Beavers shot 47.7 percent from the floor and 95.7 percent (22-of-23) at the free throw line. They also finished with a 39-33 edge on the glass. The Lions shot 47.6 percent but were just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from distance and committed 18 turnovers.
Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday as Babson visits 15th-ranked Springfield at 2 p.m., while Emerson travels to Coast Guard for a 1 p.m. start.
