Box Score NORTON, Mass.—Senior Jack Coolahan (Newtown, Pa.) made a career-high seven three-pointers and scored 25 points to help 22nd-ranked Babson College defeat Wheaton College, 76-51, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Emerson Gymnasium.
With the victory, Babson improves to 13-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, while Wheaton slips to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists, three blocks and two steals for the Beavers. Junior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) added 15 points and seven boards, while classmate Crew Ainge (Wellesley, Mass.) dished out a game-high seven assists to go along with three steals.
First-year Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to lead three players in double figures for the Lyons. Senior Alex DuBrow (Foxboro, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and classmate Robby Lowey (Foxboro, Mass.) contributed 10 points and eight boards.
Coolahan and Bradanese combined to score Babson's first 10 points and Jaworski followed up another bucket by Bradanese to stake the visitors to a 25-10 lead with 7:32 to go in the first half. Coolahan, who scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting over the opening 20 minutes, scored five straight points to extend the margin to 30-13 at the four-minute mark, and Bradanese buried his only triple of the night to keep the Green and White in front 35-23 at the break.
Wheaton got as close as nine four times over the first nine minutes of the second half, the last coming at 49-40 on a layup by Williams before the Beavers pulled away. A pair of three-pointers by Coolahan and two buckets by Bradanese stretched the margin to 59-42, while Ainge scored in transition following a blocked shot for a 19-point lead with 8:18 remaining in the contest.
Jaworski made it a 20-point game with the last of his three triples, first-year Andrew Kirkpatrick (Winnetka, Ill.) canned another three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and sophomore Beau Smith (Germantown, N.Y.) buried a jumper two trips later to give Babson its biggest lead of the night at 69-44 with 4:24 to play.
Despite shooting a season-low 37.7 percent, the Beavers connected on 13 three-pointers, scored 19 second-chance points and outscored the Lyons 15-2 off of turnovers.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts MIT, while Wheaton visits Emerson.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 37-14 all-time against Wheaton and have won 19 of their last 21 games in the series.
• After allowing its last six opponents to shoot 52.5 percent, Babson held Wheaton to a season-low 31.3 percent shooting on Wednesday night.
• With his seven triples on Wednesday, Coolahan became just the 12th player in program history to make 100 career three-pointers.
• Babson is 8-0 this season when holding opponents below 70 points.
