Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Clark University shot 57.9 percent in the second half and overcame a 19-point deficit to knock off 17th-ranked Babson College, 92-89, in overtime on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball action inside the Kneller Athletic Center.
With the loss, Babson drops to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while Clark improves to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC for the first time since 2013.
Junior Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-21 shooting to go along with seven rebounds for the Beavers. Senior Jack Coolahan (Newtown, Pa.) finished with 21 points and eight boards, while junior James Welch (Needham, Mass.) came off the bench to contributed 12 points and two steals.
Juniors Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) scored 25 and 23 points, respectively, to lead five players in double figures for the Cougars.
The Green and White shot 59.4 percent in the first half as Jaworski and Coolahan each hit four three-pointers and combined for 34 points on the way to building a 50-35 advantage at the break. A bucket by sophomore Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) and a jumper by Jaworski gave the Beavers a 62-43 lead, their biggest of the game, with 14:48 to play in the second half.
The margin was still 13 after a layup by Welch at the 9:17 mark, and despite going nearly six minutes without a field goal, another jump shot by Jaworski stretched Babson's lead back to 81-73 with under four minutes to go in regulation. Gayman, Davern and sophomore Joel Artega (Wyncote, Pa.) scored on consecutive possessions as the Cougars pulled within 81-79 with 1:29 play. Gayman tied the game with a put back of his own miss with 0:09 to play and Beavers' junior Crew Ainge (Wellesley, Mass.) missed a pull up jumper from the left elbow sending the game to overtime.
The Green and White led by as many as three twice in the extra session but was unable to put Clark away. Gayman tied the game at 87-87 with a three-pointer at the 1:11 mark and junior Charles Stevens (Bronx, N.Y.) banged another triple on the next possession to give the hosts a three-point lead. After trading free throws and turnovers, Babson got the ball back with 7.7 seconds, but Jaworski's corner three-pointer and Coolahan's desperation heave wouldn't go down.
The Beavers, who shot just 29.8 percent in the second half and overtime, finished with just 11 assists for the second game in a row. The Cougars shot 50 percent for the game and held a 39-35 edge on the glass.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Wheaton, while Clark visits Coast Guard.
