Box Score NORTON, Mass.—Sophomore Axel Brown (Little Compton, R.I.) led all players with four goals, while classmate Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) and first-year Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored twice and dished out two assists as visiting Babson College rolled past Wheaton College, 19-7, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Nordin Field.
With its fifth straight victory, Babson is now 6-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Wheaton drops to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.), junior Connor Flaherty (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and first-year Niall Dillon (Duxbury, Mass.) all finished with two goals apiece for the Beavers. Junior Connor Hinton (Florham Park, N.J.) won 9-of-13 face-offs and sophomore Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) led all players with seven ground balls, while Dillon and sophomore Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) both caused two turnovers.
The Lyons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead only to see the Green and White rip off a seven-goal run to take control of the game. Dillon tied the game with 9:14 left in the opening quarter and Babson followed with six goals from six different players in the span of 4:27 to make it 7-1 on Brown's first tally of the game.
Wheaton cut its deficit to 8-4 at the 12:46 mark of the second quarter, but first-year Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Fabel scored 44 seconds apart to make it 10-4, and Doten converted a feed from Mishkind to extended the Babson lead to seven with 5:28 to go before halftime.
Brown scored twice in the third quarter, and O'Donoghue tallied his first career goal with 2:03 left in the stanza to give the Green and White a 15-5 advantage. Junior Kyle Neale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Kyle Rumberger (Hyannis, Mass.) notched back-to-back markers in the final 1:28 of the third to get Wheaton back within 15-7, but the Beavers outscored Wheaton 4-0 in the fourth, including man-up goals from Duffy and Brown, for the final margin.
First-year Kenan Glasgold (Princeton, N.J.) started and made four first-half saves for Babson, while sophomore Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) stopped eight shot in the second half. Senior Ryan Clair (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) made nine of his 13 saves over the opening 30 minutes for the Lyons.
The Beavers finished with the edge in shots (44-30) and ground balls (35-29), while also winning 18-of-29 face-offs.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Babson visits Clark, while Wheaton travels to Springfield.
