Fast Start Sends Women's Soccer Past Bard, 2-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Juniors Nikki Beatham (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine) each scored once early in the first half to help Babson College defeat visiting Bard College, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its second straight victory, Babson is now 2-0-1 on the year, while Bard drops to 1-1-1 overall.

Beatham opened the scoring with her first goal of the season 5:21 into the match, following a foul on the Raptors just inside midfield. Beavers' junior Kristina Simonson's (Easton, Mass.) free kick was redirected by senior Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) toward Beatham, who beat Bard sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey O'Brien (Southampton, N.J.) with a low shot from the penalty spot as she came charging off her line for a 1-0 lead.

Tyson followed with her first marker of the season just over three minutes later, collecting a loose ball that had deflected off a Raptors' defender and ripping a shot past O'Brien for a two-goal edge just 8:26 into the match.

Bard's best scoring chance of the game came midway through the first half on its only corner kick of the opening 45 minutes. Junior Isabel Keddy-Hector (Driftwood, Texas) served a ball toward the far post where first-year Carla Sanchez (McAllen, Texas) was able to settle it before hitting her shot from 10 yards just wide of the left post.

The Green and White, which dominated possession for much of the afternoon, had its best opportunity to add an insurance goal in the 78th minute. Junior Leisl Bard (Agawam, Mass.) played a ball over the defense and found Tyson, who broke in on O'Brien only to have her attempt denied by the charging keeper.

Senior goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) was forced to make just two saves for Babson, while O'Brien stopped a season-high seven shots for the Raptors.

The Beavers held a 17-5 edge in shots and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.

Both teams return to action on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. as Babson hosts Simmons College, while Bard travels across town to take on Wellesley College.

GAME NOTES: Saturday's contest was the first meeting between Babson and Bard…the Beavers are unbeaten in their last eight non-conference home matches (7-0-1) going back to 2012…going back to last season, Babson is currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak (3-0-3) and has conceded just two goals during that stretch…the Beavers are now 15-3-3 at Hartwell-Rogers Field over the last three seasons.
