Women's Soccer Falls To Endicott, 3-2, In OT

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Shelby McLenitahn (Bennington, Vt.) scored 2:24 into overtime to lift visiting Endicott College to a 3-2 win over Babson College in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its second consecutive victory, Endicott is now 4-2-2 on the year, while Babson, which had its six-game winning streak and 10-game unbeaten streak snapped, drops to 6-1-1 overall.

After the teams combined for just two shots on frame over the opening 45 minutes, play opened up in the second half. Junior Paige Marinelli (Burlington, Conn.) started the scoring with her third goal of the season in the 49th minute to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead. Following a build up through the midfield, senior Hannah Schneidenbach (Charlestown, R.I) slid a pass to Marinelli at the top of the box and she hit a low shot that bounced off the left post and over the goal line.

Beavers' senior Rachael Kantor (Westfield, Mass.) had her shot saved off the goal line following a corner kick by Marinelli in the 57th minute before junior Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine) notched the equalizer at the 64:55 mark. Tyson settled a long ball from senior Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) and drove toward the box before cutting back inside and blasting a left-footed strike past Endicott senior goalkeeper Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.) and inside the far post to make it 1-1.

The Green and White took the lead just under 15 minutes later on DiPhilippo's team-leading fourth tally of the season. Following a foul 30 yards from goal, sophomore Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) floated her free kick into the six-yard box where DiPhilippo stepped in front of Donnelly and headed the ball inside the right post for a 2-1 lead with 10:50 remaining in the game.

Babson was unable to hold onto the lead though, as the Gulls caught a break in the 87th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul was called in the box. Junior Ashley Mueskes (Georgetown, Mass.) tied the match with a rising shot that deflected off the fingertips of Beavers' senior goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) and in to force extra time.

Endicott had the only two chances in overtime, as Kapotsis made a save on a point-blank attempt by Mueskes just 36 seconds into the period before McLenithan received a pass over the top of the defense, shed a defender, and hit a shot past a charging Kapotsis from the edge of the box for the game winner.

Donnelly finished with two saves for the Gulls, while Kapotsis made a pair of saves for the Green and White, which held a 17-14 edge in shots and attempted three of the game's four corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Smith College at 1:30 p.m., while Endicott hosts Roger Williams University at 7 p.m.
