Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—Sophomore Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) scored the first goal of her career in the 80th minute as visiting Babson College defeated Bridgewater State University, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.
With the victory, Babson is now 1-0-1 on the year, while Bridgewater State drops to 0-1-0.
First-year Kelsey Ford (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also had a goal for the Beavers, who got assists from senior Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) and sophomore Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) in the win.
With the score deadlocked at 1-1 late in regulation, Narlee one-timed a corner kick from McKenna past Bears' junior goalkeeper Katie Titus (Salem, Mass.) for the decisive goal.
The Green and White took a 1-0 lead just 3:06 into the match when Ford took a feed from DiPhilippo and lofted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that eluded the outstretched hand of Titus for her first her first collegiate goal. Babson appeared to take a two-goal advantage in the 33rd minute on a strike from first-year Victoria Penta (Belmont, Mass.), but the goal was disallowed after the offside flag came up.
Bridgewater State, which was outshot 20-8 on the night, netted the equalizer in the 59th minute as freshman forward Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) headed in a Drew Guay (Fall River, Mass.) cross. Guay had beaten Beavers' senior goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) to a loose ball near the end line off the rebound of an Emily Lane (Parsonfield, Maine) shot. With the goalie out of position, Guay served a cross right in front of the empty net which was headed in by Pepin. The scoring strike marked the first collegiate goal for the BSU rookie.
After Narlee had put the Beavers back on top, the Bears had a quality chance to equalize in the 85th minute. A Pepin redirect off a long cross was turned back by Kapotsis, who made a diving stop to her right. The Beavers would control play over the final five minutes and did not allow another shot.
Kapotsis finished with four saves to record her first win of the season for the Green and White, while Titus, who was making her first collegiate start, turned aside five shots. BSU defenders also made a pair of team saves.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Bard College in the Soccer Without Borders Classic at 1:30 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to Wheaton College at 12 p.m.
